CASTINE, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team lost a hard-fought contest in its season-opener against Roger Williams Saturday, 58-57, at the Pepsi Mariner Challenge hosted by Maine Maritime.

The Hawks will face the host Maine Maritime Academy tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in the tournament championship game, after the Mariners defeated the University of Maine at Fort Kent 63-57 in game one. Bowdoin will play Maine Fort Kent at 12:00 p.m. in the consolation game.
Shannon Brady led the way for Bowdoin with 12 points and seven rebounds, Kate Kerrigan and Marle Curle picked up 11 points each, and Megan Phelps grabbed a game-best 15 boards. Angelica Ariola led all scorers with 22 points and five assists for Roger Williams.

Bowdoin held a 28-24 halftime lead and extended their advantage to six points early in the second half. But the Hawks rallied and the contest remained tight until the late moments.

Brady hit a lay-up to give the Polar Bears a 54-51 lead with 2:11 to go, but Ariola tied the game on a three-pointer with 1:27 remaining. Bowdoin regained the lead seconds later when Kerrigan connected from long-range, but Ariola answered again for the Hawks with a game-tying trifecta with just 12 seconds left.

After a Bowdoin turnover, Ariola was fouled and she connected on 1 of 2 free throws with two seconds left to seal the win for Roger Williams.

Bowdoin held a 48-36 edge on the glass but committed 18 turnovers to just 11 for Roger Williams. The Polar Bears struggled from long distance, hitting 5 of 26 from beyond the arc.

Women's Basketball Final: Bowdoin 74, Maine-Fort Kent 45

CASTINE, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team used a strong first half to defeat the University of Maine at Fort Kent 74-45 on Sunday afternoon in the Consolation game of the Pepsi Mariner Challenge.

The Polar Bears (1-1) were led by Megan Phelps who recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while adding four steals. Lauren Petit recorded 15 points and two rebounds, and teammate Marle Curle recorded a game-high eight assists. Sara Binkhorst had 11 points while Siena Mitman pitched in 10.

For her performance, Phelps was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Bowdoin dominated the court early, building a 16-point lead to enter the half 36-20, the Polar Bears never looked back, forcing 34 turnovers and earning 19 steals as a team. The Bengals were led by Bobbi Myles who picked up 14 points, and four rebounds.

Bowdoin will return to action on November 19th when they travel to Endicott for a 7:00 PM game time.

WBB Final: Bowdoin 68, Endicott 48 (with box score)

BEVERLY, Mass. - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team dominated the second half of a 68-48 non-conference victory at Endicott on Wednesday evening.

The Polar Bears broke open a tie game at halftime and outscored the Gulls 41-21 in the second period to improve to 2-1 on the campaign. Endicott falls to 1-2 with the loss.

Lauren Petit provided a spark off the bench for Bowdoin, scoring 11 of her game-high 16 points in the second half for the Polar Bears on 4-8 from three-point range. Sara Binkhorst had 15 points and ten rebounds while Shannon Brady scored 13 for Bowdoin. Kayleen Whail led Endicott with 15 points and eight caroms.

Both teams struggled offensively out of the game as the contest entered intermission tied at 27-27. The teams traded buckets for the opening eight minutes of the second half as Bowdoin held a three-point lead, 45-42, with 11:21 to go.

Binkhorst started the decisive surge with a three-pointer for the Polar Bears, and Petit knocked down a pair of trifectas as Bowdoin rolled off a 18-3 run over the next six minutes to push their lead to 63-45 with under six minutes to go. The Polar Bear defense clamped down as well, holding Endicott to 20.8% shooting in the second half.

Bowdoin held a 49-36 edge on the glass and scored 18 second-chance points on 19 offensive rebounds. The Polar Bears also cashed in 24 points off 21 Endicott turnovers.

The Polar Bears will return to action on Saturday as they play their home opener against Bates at 2:00 p.m. in Morrell Gymnasium.

Bowdoin 65, Bates 48

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team pulled away in the second half to defeat Bates, 65-48, on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears improve to 3-1 with the victory while the Bobcats fall to 3-2.

Bowdoin's Megan Phelps scored 15 points to lead all players while Shannon Brady added 10 points, four rebounds and three blocks for the Polar Bears. Sara Binkhorst had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists while Kate Kerrigan added eight points, three assists, two blocks and two steals in the victory.

Chelsea Nason led three Bates players in double figures with 14 points. Allie Coppola added 10 points and 13 rebounds while Molly Brown also had 10 points for the Bobcats.

Bowdoin led 31-25 at halftime but the Bobcats closed the gap to 38-34 follow a lay-in by Brown with 17:16 to go. Bowdoin called time out and clamped down defensively, holding the Bobcats scoreless for over ten minutes until a pair of Nason free throws with 6:11 to go. Meanwhile, the Bowdoin offense kicked into gear, as Phelps scored eight points in a decisive 19-0 Polar Bear run that extended the lead to 57-34 with 6:11 remaining.

Bowdoin held Bates to 26.6% shooting for the game and 15.2% (5-33) from three-point range. Bowdoin held a slim 45-44 edge in rebound and forced 21 Bates turnovers. Bowdoin dominated the paint, scoring 38 points from inside.

Bowdoin will return to action on Tuesday evening at the University of New England (5:30 p.m.). Bates will play on Monday night at Maine Machias (6:00 p.m.). Bates and Bowdoin will play their NESCAC conference game in Lewiston on February 13.

UNE 68, Bowdoin 64

BIDDEFORD, Maine - The University of New England women's basketball team rallied from a late deficit with under four minutes remaining to defeat Bowdoin, 68-64 on Tuesday evening at the Alfond Forum.

The Nor'easters improve to 3-1 on the season while the Polar Bears fall to 3-2. UNE was sparked by 21 points off the bench from Alanna Vose, who went 6-10 from three-point range. Bowdoin was paced by 19 points from Sara Binkhorst and 18 from Shannon Brady.

UNE led 37-31 at halftime after a wild first half in which each team led by as many as 11 points. Bowdoin rallied to take a 47-45 lead on a Lauren Petit three-pointer with 11:20 remaining in the second half. The Polar Bears maintained their lead until 3:07 to play when Meghan Gribbon made a layup and converted a free throw to give the hosts a 56-54 edge. Lauren Hayden extended UNE's lead to 59-54 on a three-pointer with 2:39 to go.

Bowdoin closed the gap to a single possession on three occasions over the closing moments, including following a Sara Binkhorst jumper with six seconds to go. But the Nor'easters converted 6-6 from the free throw line in the final 38 seconds to seal the win.

Bowdoin held a 46-32 edge in rebounding, but committed 19 turnovers. Thanks to Vose, UNE went 10-23 from three-point range compared to 4-24 for the Polar Bears.

Bowdoin 73, Salve Regina 33

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team posted a superb defensive performance in a 73-33 victory over Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears, who held the Seahawks to just 20% shooting from the field in the game, improve to 4-2 this season with the win. Salve Regina drops to 3-3 on the year with the setback.

Bowdoin had a balanced attack led by 16 points from Shannon Brady. Marle Curle added 10 points while Siena Mitman contributed 10 points off the bench. Meaghan Harden had 14 points to pace the Seahawks while Allyson Esielionis also saw double figures with 11.

Bowdoin jumped to a 18-4 lead in the first seven minutes, capping a big run to open the contest with a Lauren Petit three-pointer. The Polar Bears continued to roll for the rest of the opening period and held Salve to just one field goal over the final 7:28 of the period to take a 47-14 lead at halftime.

Salve Regina found a little spark early in the second half and used a 11-0 surge to trim the Bowdoin lead to 27 points, 52-25, with 11:30 remaining. Bowdoin answered with a 13-1 run of their own to put the game away.

The Polar Bears held a 55-32 advantage in rebounds and forced 23 Salve Regina turnovers, holding the Seahawks to 20% shooting (9-45) and 0-11 from three-point range.

Bowdoin will return to action on Wednesday evening as they host the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference game at 7:00 p.m. Salve Regina will also play Wednesday evening at home against Wentworth at 5:30 p.m.

Bowdoin 65, Southern Maine 44

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team rode a hot-shooting first half to a 65-44 victory over the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday evening at Morrell Gymnasium.

The 21-point margin of victory is the largest ever for the Polar Bears (5-2) in their 40-year history against the Huskies (3-3).

Sara Binkhorst had a game-high 19 points to go with five rebounds and four assists for Bowdoin. Shannon Brady added 16 points, seven boards and four blocks for the Polar Bears while Marle Curle pitched in 15 points. Megan Pelletier had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead Southern Maine. Rebecca Knight also saw double figures with 10 points for the Huskies.

Bowdoin hit nine of their first ten shots from the field and connected on 64% for the opening period, blowing open a tight game and quickly building a double-digit lead. Meanwhile, the Polar Bear defense held the Huskies to just one field goal over the final 6:40 of the first half and held a 43-23 edge at intermission.

USM scored the first five points of the second half, looking to get back into the contest. But Bowdoin replied with a 12-2 run to increase its lead to 55-30 following a Binkhorst hoop-and-harm with 13:19 to go. The Polar Bears would lead by as many as 26 points in the second half en route to the win.

Bowdoin finished at 46% shooting for the contest and held a 40-36 edge in rebounding. The Polar Bears scored 23 points off 17 USM turnovers and scored 32 points in the paint in the victory.

The Polar Bears will return to action at Colby on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Southern Maine will travel to play at Western Connecticut at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

Bowdoin 56, Colby 48

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team dominated the glass and Megan Phelps finished with 16 points and eight rebounds to help the Polar Bears deal Colby its first loss of the year in a 56-48 victory Saturday.

Bowdoin moved to 6-2 overall, while the Mules dropped to 7-1.

Colby forced 24 Polar Bear turnovers in the game, but Bowdoin had a huge 43-24 margin in rebounding. The Polar Bears had five players with five rebounds or more, while the Mules had none.

Phelps was 8-for-12 from the field, using a variety of inside moves and hard drives to the basket. Sara Binkhorst added 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting, while Siena Mitman and Kate Kerrigan both had seven points. Kerrigan had four offensive rebounds and tied Phelps for game-high with eight. Carylanne Wolfington led Colby with 15 points.

Colby took its only lead of the game at 21-19 after going on a 9-0 run late in the opening half. The Polar Bears went ahead 26-23 before the break as Marle Curle drained a 3-point shot with 28 seconds to go.

The Mules came out sluggish in the second half and Bowdoin cashed in. With Bowdoin up 27-25, the Polar Bears used an 8-0 run to make it a 10-point game at 35-25 with 15:25 to play. Bowdoin led by as many as 16 points in the period before a late Colby 8-0 run closed the final margin to eight points.

The Polar Bears will close out their first semester on Wednesday when they travel to play at Maine-Farmington at 7:00 p.m.

FARMINGTON, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team never trailed in a dominating 75-49 non-conference victory at the University of Maine-Farmington on Wednesday evening.

The Polar Bears close out their first semester with a victory and improve to 7-2 on the season. The Beavers drop to 3-5 overall with the loss.

Shannon Brady led four Bowdoin players in double figures with 15 points and eight rebounds. Sara Binkhorst (12) and Marle Curle (11) also reached double digits while Lydia Caputi pitched in a career-high 11 off the bench for the Polar Bears. Meghan Smith was the high scorer for UMF with 15.

Bowdoin came out the gate with full-court defensive pressure and the Beavers could not respond. The Polar Bears opened the game on a 10-0 run and extended their lead to 18-6 midway through the opening frame. UMF scored five straight points to close the gap to seven points, 18-11, but Kate Kerrigan nailed a three-pointer, pushing the lead back to double digits and sparking a 19-9 run to close out the half as Bowdoin led 40-20 at the break.

The Polar Bears led by as many as 30 points in the second half and forced 35 turnovers by Farmington, cashing in 34 points off of the miscues. Bowdoin held a 43-34 edge in rebounding and connected on 42% of its shots for the game, including nine three-pointers. UMF hit just 33% from the field in the loss.

Bowdoin will return to action by hosting the Coastal Maine Classic on December 30-31 at Morrell Gymnasium. The action begins with Bates vs. MIT on Dec. 30 at 2:00 p.m. Bowdoin will host Clark at 4:00 p.m. that afternoon. The following day, Bates and Bowdoin switch opponents, with the Bobcats facing Clark at 2:00 p.m. and Bowdoin hosting MIT at 4:00 p.m.

Bowdoin 90, Clark 29

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team never trailed in a 90-29 victory over Clark University on the opening day of the Coastal Maine Classic Tuesday at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears improve to 8-2 with the victory while the Cougars fall to 3-6 this year.

Every active player scored in the game for Bowdoin, who were led by Sara Binkhorst's 17 points in 18 minutes of play. Shannon Brady scored 12 points and grabbed five boards in 15 minutes while Emily Campbell added 10 points off the bench. Kate Kerrigan scored nine points, collected six rebounds and added two steals for the Polar Bears. Marle Curle had nine points and a team-high six assists.

Sam O'Gara led Clark with 10 points while Brooke Brennan added seven.

Bowdoin jumped to an 11-2 lead in the opening moments and never looked back, extending their lead to 40-9 late in the opening stanza. The Polar Bears led 46-16 at halftime and continued to extend their lead in the second period, holding the Cougars to just 13 points. Bowdoin scored 54 points in the paint and added 29 off 25 Clark turnovers.

The Polar Bears finished at 53% shooting for the game while holding Clark to just 21% from the field. Bowdoin owned a 50-30 edge in rebounding and scored 19 points off 16 offensive caroms.

Action continues at the Coastal Maine Classic on Wednesday as Clark will face Bates (2:00 p.m.) and Bowdoin battles MIT (4:00 p.m.).
