Uimonen Named Defensive Coordinator

CASTINE, Maine – Dave Uimonen was named Defensive Coordinator at Maine Maritime Academy on Wednesday. He will also serve as the Athletic Department's Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Most recently the Assistant Linebackers and Assistant Defensive Line Coach at the University of Maine, Uimonen helped the 2013 Black Bears to a 10-3 record, the Colonial Athletic Association Championship, and the first outright championship in Orono since 1965. The defense finished 23rd in the nation, and led the CAA in pass efficiency defense and fourth down defense.

Uimonen spent the 2012 season at Springfield College, working as an assistant defensive line coach, defensive run game coordinator and special teams coordinator. Prior to returning to Springfield, Uimonen spent four seasons as a defensive assistant at Colgate coaching the defensive backs for one year before coaching the outside linebackers for the next three seasons.

Uimonen's coaching career started at Brockport State in 2004 where he was an assistant offensive coach in his first season before becoming tight end and head junior varsity coach in 2005. In the spring of 2008, he went to Northeastern as the tight ends coach prior to spending time at a first stint at Springfield College, where he was a graduate assistant working with the defensive line for two seasons.

In 2006, Uimonen helped guide the Pride to a 10-2 finish and advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. While at Springfield, Uimonen coached two all-Empire 8 conference defensive linemen.

Uimonen graduated from St. John Fisher College in 2004 where he received his bachelor's degree in Childhood Education/Special Education. He earned his Masters of Education in Educational Studies from Springfield College in 2007.

A native of Clyde, N.Y., Uimonen was a three-year letterwinner at St. John Fisher before transferring to Brockport State. He was the starting right guard in 2001 and 2002 at St. John Fisher. In 2003, he played on a Brockport team that posted a 9-2 record and participated in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

He will begin his duties at Maine Maritime on Monday, July 21.
