Healthy Carman boosts USM title chances
Logan Carman, the Huskies’ top pitcher, is back from a shoulder injury.
By Mike Lowe

GORHAM — It was minutes after the University of Southern Maine baseball team lost to Endicott in the NCAA Division III New England Regional on Saturday, setting up a winner-take-all game the next day, when the players expressed confidence they would win. Why? Logan Carman. Carman, a senior left-hander who missed much of the season because of shoulder irritation, would pitch. And he didn’t disappoint...

Experience matters for USM baseball team
The Huskies, who reached the final last year, open their national tournament Friday night.
By Mike Lowe

GORHAM — How much difference does a year make? The University of Southern Maine baseball players hope it makes all the difference. A year ago the Huskies lost in the championship game of the NCAA Division III national tournament, 4-1, to Linfield College of Oregon. They’re making the return trip to Appleton, Wisconsin, this weekend and look to turn that experience in their favor...

Huskies have quite a catch in Verrier
by RANDY WHITEHOUSE

"I said, 'You know what Matt does? Without Matt, we're nowhere,'" said Flaherty, now in his 29th year at USM. "'Without a catcher here like Matt, we can't operate on the level we operate on.'" Verrier's responsibilities as a catcher — calling every pitch, communicating on bunts, relays and other defensive plays, controlling the opposition's running game — in addition to his presence in the lineup as the Huskies' top power threat, are why Flaherty nominated him for Little East Conference Player of the Year...

UW-Whitewater Downs Southern Maine 8-1

APPLETON, Wis. -- Junior Mikole Pierce (De Pere, Wis.) drove in four runs with a double and a triple and scored twice to propel the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks to an 8-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an opening-round game of the 2014 NCAA Division III Baseball National Championship Tournament Friday evening at Fox Cities Stadium.

The loss drops the Huskies (35-14) into the elimination bracket where they will play Salisbury University on Saturday (2:15 p.m. EDT). Wisconsin-Whitewater (41-7) will play SUNY-Cortland in a winners bracket game tomorrow evening (8:45 p.m. EDT). SUNY-Cortland defeated Salisbury 4-3 in an earlier game.

In the other half of the eight-team bracket, the University of St. Thomas shut out defending champion Linfield College, 10-0, and Baldwin Wallace University edged Emory University 5-4. Linfield faces Emory in an elimination game on Saturday (11:00 a.m. EDT) while St. Thomas and Baldwin Wallace move into a winners bracket game (5:30 p.m.).

Senior right-hander Scott Plaza (Arlington Heights, Ill.) benefitted from Pierce's early offensive outburst to pitch seven shutout innings. Plaza gave up just three hits and two walks while striking out five to earn his eight win of the season.

Rookie infielder Paul McDonough (Wells, Maine) had two of USM's five hits and scored the lone run in the ninth inning after reaching on an error. Senior outfielder Chris Bernard (Scarborough, Maine) made a highlight-reel catch and turned it into a double play in the sixth inning.

Senior starter Logan Carman (Newfields, N.H.) took the loss for the Huskies going 2 1/3 innings allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and one walk. Five relievers combined to surrender just two runs over the final seven innings.

The Warhawks' jumped on Carman in the opening frame as the first two batters reached base on an error and a looping single into left before Pierce crushed a pitch into the right-center-field gap for a two-run triple. Pierce scored the Warhawks third run of the frame on a single by senior Michael Gonzalez (Delavan, Wis.).

UWW put another three spot on the board in the second inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead. A walk to junior Adam Gregory (Edgerton, Wis.) and a one-out single from senior Dylan Friend (Burlington, Wis.) put runners at the corners. With Pierce at the plate, Friend stole second and followed Gregory home when Pierce doubled to left field. Pierce advanced to third on a single by Gonzalez and scored on a groundout by senior Jared Fon (Germantown, Wis.)

Friend drove in a run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly, and Gonzalez plated another run in the eighth with a sac fly to make it 8-0.

The Huskies got their lone run in the ninth as McDonough reached on an infield error, took second on a single by senior Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) and advanced to third on a fly out. With senior John Carey (South Portland, Maine) at the plate, UWW rookie reliever Austin Jones (Wauwatosa, Wis.) crossed up his catcher to throw a wild pitch allowing McDonough to score. Carey would single, but Jones settled down to get the final out.

The Warhawks outhit the Huskies 13-5 for the game. Friend, Pierce, Gonzalez and junior Trey Cannon (Palatine, Ill.) each had two hits.

The Huskies fall 8-1 and will play an elimination game Saturday.
By Mike Lowe

APPLETON, Wis. — This one got away quickly. Just six pitches into the game, the University of Southern Maine was down 3-0 to Wisconsin-Whitewater, and it never got better. Steve Solloway: Richards’ pitching is what matters, not his pitch count
USM has a relief pitcher who likes to pitch … and pitch … and …

Andrew Richards greeted me with a handshake and a smile that suddenly became a very visible grimace. He yanked the hand attached to his valuable right arm away from mine. He saw my look of horror. “Just kidding,” said Richards. He enjoyed the moment. He’s the University of Southern Maine relief pitcher with the resilient right arm and the quirky humor that keeps everything in balance...
