South Portland wins Little League state

South Portland LL heads to NE Regionals

(South Portland) The South Portland Little League All-Star team will leave for Bristol, Connecticut and the New England Regionals on Saturday. South Portland ended a 50 year drought after winning States last weekend going 3 & 0 at the Tournament. South Portland will face Vermont on Sunday afternoon.

PPH recap: South Portland rallies to win opener in L.L. regional

The South Portland American baseball team scored seven runs in the sixth inning to win its first game in the 11-12-year-old Little League Baseball East Regional, beating Essex Junction, the Vermont state champ, 9-7 on Sunday in Bristol, Connecticut. South Portland advances to the winners’ bracket and will play Connecticut champion Fairfield American at 1 p.m. Monday. Andrew Heffernan started the sixth inning with a two-run home run to get South Portland within a run, 5-4. Johnny Poole followed with a triple and scored to tie it when Nolan Hobbs reached on an error. Ben Stanley gave South Portland the lead with a sacrifice fly. Ian Wright tacked on an run with an RBI single and Carson Blake hit a two-run single to give South Portland a 9-5 lead.

The Maine champions now face an elimination game Tuesday evening.

BRISTOL, Conn. — The South Portland American baseball team was held to two hits in a 8-0 loss Monday to Connecticut’s Fairfield American at the New England Little League Regional.

Richie Gilboy and Aiden Lee each had singles for South Portland American, the Maine champions for 11- and 12-year-olds. Fairfield American scored two runs in the first inning, one in the third and five more in the fifth.

South Portland American, which won its regional opener Sunday against Vermont, 9-7, faces an elimination game at 7 p.m. Tuesday versus Cumberland American of Rhode Island.

recap: South Portland stays alive!

(Bristol, CT) The South Portland American Little league All Star team erased a 2-0 deficit and came back to beat Rhode Island Tuesday afternoon 3-2. Maine will now move on and play Vermont in an elimination game on Thursday afternoon at 1:00. If South Portland wins on Thursday they will move into the Semifinal round on Friday

...Rhode Island, represented by Cumberland American, took an early lead on a two-run double by Jack LaRose in the first inning. Maine tied the game in the bottom of the third when Johnny Poole doubled home Matthew Fogg and then scored on a single by Hobbs.

Hobbs finished with three of Maine’s six hits.

Andrew Heffernan pitched the opening 41/3 innings for Maine, striking out seven and giving up three hits. Lee picked up the win with 12/3 innings of one-hit relief.

South Portland Little League aiming for Williamsport

BRISTOL, Connecticut - The Little League New England Regionals are rolling along in Bristol, and the team from Maine is staying alive.

South Portland managed to oust Rhode Island from the tournament Tuesday night with a 3-2 win, and finds itself in an elimination game with Vermont Thursday night with the season on the line. The team took down Vermont 9-7 in the opening contest of regionals, and head coach Jim Poole think this team has what it takes to advance to Williamsport and the Little League World Series.
