Little League 11-12: South Portland American advances in New England Little League regional
Nolan Hobbs and Richie Gilboy hit home runs in an 8-5 win over Vermont.

...The winner of Friday’s game will play Connecticut for the regional title – and a trip to the Little League World Series – on Saturday.

Nolan Hobbs hit a three-run homer and Richie Gilboy followed with a home run in the next at-bat during South Portland’s four-run outburst in the second inning. Aiden Lee had three hits and three RBI, and recorded the final nine outs to pick up a save. Johnny Poole was the winning pitcher.

South Portland is 3-1 in the regional, including two wins over Vermont.

Bill Nemitz: Tuning out the world, tuning in the Little League World Series
The South Portland American team is one of many reasons to watch the real boys of summer.

...Back in 1996, almost the entire Augusta team gathered for a 25-year reunion. Two years ago, more than half of them showed up to be inducted, as an entire squad, into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame.

Meaning they haven’t forgotten. If anything, Pickett said, memories of that summer sharpen as the years, and now the decades, fly by.

“I still think of it now and then,” he mused, “Especially at this time of year.”

Which brings us back to our current Maine champs.

It’s a Cinderella story in the making: The entire South Portland American Little League, from which these 11 all-stars were drawn, consists of just 33 players divided among three teams – a far cry from other Maine cities and towns with triple that number.

This Little Leaguer who takes 'big daddy hacks' has stolen our hearts

Richie Gilboy is a good sweet boy who is playing in the Little League World Series, yet he is aware of his weaknesses as a player:

There’s a beautiful level of self-awareness to Gilboy’s game. Most kids want to talk up their strengths or puff out their chests before the game, but he knows he likes to take “big daddy hacks” and isn’t afraid to tell the world.

This is how good players become great. Bless you, Richie Gilboy, our sweet perfect baseball boy. Keep swinging for the fences, not just in baseball but in life.

South Portland Little Leaguers hold off New Hampshire, advance to regional final

In a classic border war between Maine and New Hampshire, with a berth in the New England Little League regional finals on the line, it was the 11-and-12-year-olds from South Portland who came through in the clutch.

After falling behind 3-0 in the bottom of the first and 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth, the South Portland American Little League scored three fifth-inning runs and held off a final surge by Goffstown, New Hampshire, in the last of the sixth to escape with a 7-6 win at Bristol, Connecticut, Friday afternoon.

The South Portland contingent becomes only the fourth Maine team to advance to a Little League regional championship, and will play for a spot in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Saturday afternoon at 1:00 against Fairfield, Connecticut.

South Portland advances to Little League regional final
The state champion is one win away from the World Series after a 7-6 win over New Hampshire.

... Nolan Hobbs, who pitched five strong innings before reaching his pitch limit and moving to first base, ended the game by catching a pop fly in foul territory.

“He’s all heart,” South Portland Manager Jim Poole said of Gilboy, who earned his colorful nickname because of his player introduction remarks televised on ESPN earlier in the tournament.

“He believed in his defense. He threw strikes and gritted it out with the rest of them.”

Maine previously eliminated Rhode Island (3-2 on Tuesday) and Vermont (8-5 on Thursday) after losing 8-0 to Connecticut on Monday afternoon. Several coaches and players from Rhode Island returned to Bristol to cheer for Maine because the players, who shared a dormitory, became such good friends.

Little League notebook: New Hampshire manager gambled and lost

- Goffstown had four substitutes, but only three played against Maine, contrary to Little League rules.

-ANDREW HEFFERNAN played second base and shortstop for South Portland on Friday. He’ll be the starting pitcher Saturday against Connecticut, which beat Maine 8-0 on Monday.

- SOUTH PORTLAND parents and fans have been told to arrive well before the 1 p.m. start because the last time a Connecticut team played in the New England final, thousands of fans packed Breen Field.\
