Bangor Coffee News tops Yankee Ford for third state Legion title in four years

...Ethan Stoddard stroked a two-run single in the fifth inning to give the Comrades a 6-0 lead, then added the game’s exclamation point two innings later by blasting a first-pitch fastball over the left-field fence for a two-run homer that made it 9-3.

“A lot of teams win a state championship and are satisfied, but this team will regroup after one day and go down to the regional and compete and let the chips fall where they may,” said Morris. “That’s kind of how these teams have rolled over these last few years.

“One thing good about this Bangor group is they like to play, they like to compete, and they’re playing for something. Now we’re going to compete for a Northeast regional title and see where it takes us.” ... our-years/

Bangor team regains American Legion title
Coffee News earns its third championship in four years with a 9-4 victory over defending champ Yankee Ford of South Portland.

“They kind of nickel and dimed him a little bit, but he just kept his composure,” Morris said of Yankee Ford.

“We just didn’t get the big hit, but you’ve got to give all the credit to their pitching staff,” said Yankee Ford Manager Al Livingston.

“They were tough when they needed to be.”

Coffee News hammered out 12 hits and took advantage of 10 walks and seven hit batsmen.

“No excuses,” Livingston said. “We just got a little light in our pitching staff at the end here.” ... ion-final/

Bangor Coffee News Legion team blends tradition, talent to reach regional tourney

...In particular, a pitching staff that tossed three shutouts and yielded just five earned runs over 44 innings during five state tournament games compensated for an offense that proved timely but struggled at times until breaking loose for 12 hits in Sunday’s 9-4 championship-game victory over Yankee Ford of South Portland at Husson University.

Jesse Colford, cut from the junior varsity team as a freshman at Bangor High School only to be part of the starting rotation on the collegiate level as a freshman at Husson this spring, was the definitive ace, winning both his starts with a tournament-MVP effort highlighted by 28 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings.

Gary Farnham, who will get the start when Bangor Coffee News opens regional play in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday against Franklin County, Vermont, came within two outs of a complete-game shutout during his state-tourney start. Ethan Stoddard pitched eight shutout innings during a Day 3 victory over Yankee Ford. ... l-tourney/

Colford makes most of opportunity with Bangor Legion program

...Comebacks are nothing new for Colford, who failed to earn a spot on the junior varsity roster as a freshman at Bangor High School in 2013.

Undaunted, he kept playing the sport that summer and not only earned that roster spot a year later but since then has helped Bangor teams win five state championships as well as embark on an undefeated run to the 2014 Senior League World Series semifinals.

That resume includes a 1-0 shutout victory over South Portland for the Bangor Cadets in the 2014 Junior Legion state final, a key role as an infielder and relief pitcher on Bangor High School’s 2015 and 2016 Class A state-title teams, and as a member of Bangor Coffee News’ American Legion state-championship efforts in 2015 and 2017.

“What a great story for a lot of young kids, especially in this day and age when there are a lot of high expectations for kids to come in and play,” Morris said. “To be cut as a freshman and to now be part of five or six state championships is amazing to me and a credit to how dedicated he’s been.” ... n-program/
