Bessey Motors walks off on Coast Athletics in American Legion tourney opener

...essey Motors has had its share of fantastic finishes this season, but Wednesday's was its biggest to date. Trailing by three in the bottom of the ninth inning, Bessey plated a pair of runs to pull within one. With runners at the corners, Troy Johnson stepped to the plate.

“When Cameron (Slicer) came home, he looked at me and said, 'Take a deep breath,” Johnson said. “I think that actually helped. I took a deep breath and I knew the kid was just throwing fastballs… I knew if I made contact that it would go somewhere.”

Johnson made contact and drove the ball into the left field corner, scoring both runners and winning the game for Bessey.

“I think the thing we do the best as a team is grind,” Johnson said. “I knew we would not give up, we are a hard team to beat I think.”

Pastime Club rally falls short against Yankee Ford at American Legion tourney

...Pastime entered the ninth trailing by four, but got things going against the Yankee Ford relief corps.

Brock Belanger started the top of the ninth with a walk for Pastime. His teammates behind him hot a single and drew another walk to load the bases.

Lucas Francis then hit a sacrifice fly to plate Belanger, cutting the deficit to three. Pastime drew two more walks to pull within a run, but a grounder to third ended the comeback.

“I'm proud of my guys,” Yankee Ford Manager Al Livingston said. “That's a lot of pressure on that last play with the throw to first. Not every kid can make that play.”

Bangor’s Farnham shuts down Bessey Motors in state Legion tourney

...“I was just saying ‘Whoever made up that pitch count rule…’ because, yeah, last year I would have been still going,” Farnham said. “We always have guys that step up and Noah Missbrenner stepped up big and got those last two outs.”

Missbrenner came on and allowed a bloop single to Brayden Bean (two hits). A passed ball moved both runners up a base, but Missbrenner got a flyout and strikeout to seal it.

“We had our chances,” said Bessey Motors coach Shane Slicer, whose team scored four in the ninth to beat Coastal Landscape, 4-3, on Wednesday. “We’ve got to score earlier on him… I like the fight, but we can’t rely on that extra energy in the ninth to try to win games like we have been. We’ve got to take care of business, one through eight.”

Farnham outdueled Bessey’s Colton Carson, who went the distance, allowed five hits, one walk and two earned runs. He struck out seven and hit two batters.

Pastime hunts down a big win

...Pastime will face Zone 2 rival Bessey Motors in another elimination game at 1 p.m. on Friday.

"These kids battle and they compete all the time," Pastime coach Jake Brown said. "We're in a good spot. If we show up and we stay disciplined at the plate, have quality at bats and take care of the baseball in the field..."

Richardson scattered seven hits and allowed one earned run while walking three and fanning four. He dominated the formidable 3-4-5 hitters in Brewer's lineup — Logan Rogerson, Jack Corey and KVAC Class A Player of the Year Alex Brooks — who combined to 0-for-11 with a walk and a strikeout.

"Those 2-3-4 hitters are dangerous," Brown said. "I think they did a good job getting ahead of the count and working in the off-speed stuff. Hunter and Brock (Belanger, the catcher) did a great job with that middle of the order. If you shut down their middle of the order, you have a good chance of beating them."
