Bangor Coffee News, Brewer clinch American Legion state tourney berths

BANGOR, Maine — Right-hander Gary Farnham scattered nine hits over eight innings as the Bangor Coffee News Comrades became the first Zone 1 team to clinch a berth in next week’s American Legion baseball state tournament with a 10-4 victory over R.H. Foster of Hampden at Husson University on Saturday afternoon.

Brewer earned the zone’s second state tourney berth by eliminating Hampden 2-0 in Saturday’s late game, and will join Bangor Coffee News in Sunday’s 1 p.m. championship round of the zone playoffs.

The Comrades will need just one victory Sunday to win the zone tournament while Brewer would have to defeat Bangor twice to claim the title.

Bangor Coffee News tops Brewer to win Zone 1 championship

BANGOR, Maine — Ethan Stoddard and Zach Cowperthwaite combined to scatter nine hits over nine innings as the Bangor Coffee News Comrades captured the American Legion Zone 1 baseball title Sunday with a 7-4 victory over Brewer at Husson University.

The win came in what turned out to be the second game of the championship-round doubleheader, as Brewer defeated Bangor Coffee News 9-4 earlier in the day to force a winner-take-all final.

Both top-ranked Bangor Coffee News (14-5) and No. 3 Brewer (11-9) will advance to the state American Legion tournament scheduled to begin Wednesday, also at Husson University.

Yankee Ford tops Zone 3 United, moves on to State

... “We, one through nine, are pretty strong, offensively,” said Yankee Ford head coach Alan Livingston. “Lately, we’ve caught some pretty good pitching. I was expecting we might have some trouble tonight. [Z3U starter Harnett] threw a no-hitter against Coastal; they lost one-zip to Coastal earlier in the year.”

“The theme of our season seemed to be ‘one bad inning,’” said Z3U head coach Erik Winchester. “I looked at it this way: We’re going to have that one bad inning, however it happens. Let’s try to minimize the damage. The baseball gods, that’s how they work sometimes.”

“It happened again tonight; and then we slowly started to climb out of it,” Winchester said. “They scored all those runs in that one inning, and it was early on. And we slowly started to peck away.”

Yankee Ford combines players from South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough, Gorham, Bonny Eagle and Sacopee Valley. Z3U, meanwhile, is built of Freeporters, Gray-New Gloucesterites, Yarmouthites and a lone Lake Regioner.

Yankee Ford travels to Bangor for the State tournament this week.

Brewer Falcons primed for Legion title run
BREWER - For Brewer Falcons head coach Shane Graham, the past week has been a whirlwind of baseball.
"We played, if you're really looking at it, over a seven day period, probably 60 innings of baseball, probably."
That includes more than 40 innings in the Zone 1 Legion baseball tournament alone. But as five-year team member Logan Rogerson has figured out, there's a formula to plowing through that stretch.

Zone 1 Legion baseball honors Stoddard and Guerrette
STATEWIDE - Two of the best players in the area over the course of the past season were recognized by Legion baseball Zone 1 coaches Monday night as having dominated the region in 2017.

The coaches awarded Bangor's Ethan Stoddard Player of the Year honors, coming off the heels of an exceptional slate. Stoddard drove in 15 runs this summer, putting up an impressive .344 batting average in that time. He also contributed on the mound for the Coffee News Comrades, going 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA.

‘We’re not going anywhere:’ Maine American Legion baseball perseveres amid dwindling participation

...Paul cited the roster sizes of this year’s six Zone 1 teams, with three at the maximum 18 players while the other three were between 16 and 18.

“So I don’t think it’s in the dire straits that some people think it is,” said Paul. “If you watch the tournament and watch the teams play, the baseball is still very good and the coaching is very good.

“The history and tradition of American Legion baseball is as strong as ever, and I think we just need to keep pounding on the positives of the whole thing as opposed to looking at the would-be and could-be negative issues.”

The positives include seeking expansion of the Junior Legion program as both a feeder system for Senior Legion and as a separate opportunity for more youngsters to play the sport, as well as the continuing chance for top teams to compete for zone, state, regional and even national championships.
