USM’s Jake Dexter follows brother’s footsteps to Sanford

Jake Dexter’s family legacy in Maine baseball is important enough, but he doesn’t let it define him.

Jake is the son of Tom Dexter, who headed the baseball program at Colby College for 15 years and now serves as an assistant there. Jake also is the younger brother of Sam Dexter, who excelled as a shortstop at the University of Southern Maine and was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 23rd round of the 2016 MLB draft.

This summer, Jake Dexter — also a standout player at USM — will follow in the footsteps of his brother Sam by playing for the Sanford Mainers.

"We were very interested in Jake Dexter when his brother said he was better than he was," said Aaron Izaryk, head coach of the Sanford Mainers. "Jake’s path to a roster spot in Sanford had a lot to do with his brother and the presence he had on this team. That said, I think Jake will carve his own legacy here."

Jake Dexter finds his role in NECBL
Messalonskee graduate excelling as closer for Sanford Mainers.

...“He’s a matchup nightmare for teams. I don’t think anybody likes to see 13 (Dexter’s number) warming up in the bullpen,” Chris Morris, Sanford’s manager, said.

This summer stint with the Mainers is Dexter’s first opportunity to focus just on pitching, and he’s excelled. As the key to Sanford’s bullpen, Dexter is 2-0 with a 2.16 earned run average. He’s pitched 33 1/3 innings in 23 games, striking out 33 while walking just 12 and surrendering 25 hits. Opponents are hitting a scant .210 off Dexter. His ERA is currently fifth-best in the league, and on Sunday, Dexter will represent Sanford in the NECBL All-Star Game, in North Adams, Massachusetts.

“He’s good because, he never changes his motion. He gets the ball and he throws,” Tim Corey, Sanford’s pitching coach, said of Dexter. “Whatever happens, he gets the ball back and comes right at guys and throws strikes.”
