Gray-New Gloucester's Smith gets 400th career win

...Smith, whose coaching career started in Massachusetts in 1971 and included stops in Oklahoma as well as Hebron and Bridgton, said he was proud to celebrate the milestone with his players, but the focus is on the future.

"I couldn't have done it with a better bunch of guys," he said on Friday. "It's a great bunch to share it with."

"It's one of those things ... remember when you first turned 21 and all the hoopla with that and then you get there and you think, 'OK, that's it. What's next?'" he added.

Though he started coaching 46 years ago, Smith, 68, estimated he's coached 33 of those years. He started in Medway, Massachusetts, where his players included a player of the year who went on to play for the University of Maine, knuckleballer Tom Mahan, in the early 1980s. ... in/2138340
