Senior tosses one-hitter as Hampden snaps Brewer’s eight-game winning streak

... Kobe Rogerson’s fourth-inning single was the only hit off the University of Maine-bound McKenney, who struck out 10 and didn’t walk anybody. He threw just 71 pitches, 51 for strikes.

“I really had only two pitches going tonight, my fastball and my curve,” said the 6-foot-3, 240-pound McKenney. “I was able to throw my fastball early in the count to get ahead of the hitters and then mix in some breaking stuff. I was able to put it where I wanted it.

“It was definitely one of my best games of the season,” added McKenney, who is now 2-2.

“He had very good velocity on his fastball,” said Brewer senior catcher Alex Maxsimic. “He hit his spots pretty well. And his curve was good. It came in quick.

Hampden baseball breaks out bats in win over Messalonskee
Broncos smack 13 hits in win over Eagles

...It was the Broncos’ (8-3) sixth win in seven games. Hampden jumped on Messalonskee’s young pitching early, scoring all nine runs over the first four innings. Messalonskee started freshman Andrew Everett, who made his varsity pitching debut. Everett pitched into the third, before giving the ball to Elijah Caret.

“A great hitting team,” Messalonskee (3-7) coach Ray Bernier said. “When you’re facing a team that’s hot in hitting, you definitely can’t make errors. Some errors and some misreads in the field, I think we have to make those plays. You can’t give them the extra outs.”

Hampden defeats Mt. Ararat 16-2

... John Wolfington was walked at the bottom of the order and Moody (62 pitches, eight walks) was finally pulled with Lorenzo set to bat for the third time in two innings.

“The last week or so, we’ve really been putting it together offensively,” Hampden Academy coach McLean Poulin said. “Beginning of the year, we’d have eight, 10 hits in a game, but never the timely clutch hits with runners in scoring position. The last week they’ve really come around.”

“They hunted for strikes,” Neron said of Hampden Academy. “They didn’t get themselves out. They waited and got their pitch, and took what we were giving them. If they weren’t throwing strikes, they were taking the walks.”

Fast start propels Hampden baseball team past Brewer

...McKenney required just 86 pitches to finish the job, with 61 for strikes as he consistently worked ahead in the count and went to as many as three balls to just two batters.

McKenney outdueled Brewer righthander Alex Brooks, who yielded just four hits and one earned run over five innings before giving way to relieve Jon Wheaton, who worked the bottom of the sixth.

McKenney had two of Hampden’s five hits, a double and an RBI single, and walked in his only other plate appearance. Teammate Brandon Smith singled twice with a run scored and an RBI.
