Bangor Christian tops Fort Fairfield for ‘D’ North baseball crown

BANGOR, Maine — Dean Grass tripled twice and doubled among his four hits and also teamed with Josh Palmeter to limit high-scoring Fort Fairfield to four hits as second-seeded Bangor Christian defeated the top-seeded Tigers 9-3 at Mansfield Stadium on Tuesday evening to capture its first Class D regional championship since 2014.

Coach Tim Collins’ North champions (14-5) play Penobscot Valley Conference rival and defending state champion Searsport (16-3) in Saturday’s 1 p.m. final at Saint Joseph’s College in Standish. Searsport, which defeated Richmond 6-2 in the Class D South title game, swept visiting Bangor Christian 2-0 and 7-4 in a regular-season doubleheader on May 8.

Searsport beats Richmond to claim ‘D’ South baseball title

...The Vikings, who face Bangor Christian in the state Class D title game back at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Saturday at 1 p.m., stole seven bases on eight attempts, committed just two errors and forced Richmond (16-3) ace Zach Small to throw 85 pitches over just four innings.

“They were doing the things that we have done this year, and they had the right formula, putting the ball in play, running the bases and putting pressure on us,” said Richmond coach Ryan Gardner. “We just didn’t rise to the occasion. Things we haven’t done all year, we did today. We don’t make that many errors, and usually we have our pitcher’s back. Today we didn’t.”

“Five errors gives them a lot, maybe take away five runs and it is a whole different game,” said Brendan Emmons, one of just two Richmond seniors.

Dynasty driven: Back-to-back-to-back regional crowns for Searsport
No. 1 Vikings secure third straight state finals berth with 6-2 Class D South win over Richmond.

...Whether the competitor is a star, role player or reserve, when their number is called, hustle typically is the defining characteristic that determines that person's future success — and ultimately, that of the team.

Searsport’s Isaiah Runci got his hustle on batting out of the No. 9 spot during the team’s Class D South championship high school baseball game against No. 2 Richmond on Tuesday, June 13.

Runci’s unlikely two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning helped key a three-run frame for the No. 1 Vikings, who got contributions from a handful of players at the plate, in the field and on the bases as Searsport swung to a 6-2 win over Richmond to clinch the regional crown.

How do you see this game playing out ?

Bangor Christian baseball team peaks for state championship run

...One key to Bangor Christian’s postseason success has been an offensive resurgence. Led by the 1-2 punch in the batting order of junior Dean Grass and senior Josh Palmeter, the Patriots have averaged 10.3 runs per game during the playoffs with seven players contributing to a 12-hit attack in the regional final.

“We knew our potential,” said Palmeter, “and we knew if we played to our potential and trusted in each other and ourselves that we could beat them, and we did that.”
Seven of those hits against Fort Fairfield came in the top of the fifth when Bangor Christian reached Tigers starter Carter Bruce for six runs to erase a 3-2 deficit.

“I think we got a couple of hits and people saw that he was hittable,” said Palmeter.

Tradition, talent take Searsport baseball to brink of third straight state title

...“It’s all baseball,” said Frye. “People want to talk about how basketball is the big thing there, but if you look at the trophy case and you look around it’s been baseball ever since I played against them at Sumner.”

That baseball legacy includes six state championships, two during the 1970s and four more in the last 11 years — two under Dave Pepin in 2006 and 2008 and now two straight under Frye.

“We have huge crowds for almost all of our games,” he said. “I coach soccer there, too, and we don’t get the support there we get for baseball. I think it’s definitely a baseball town.”

Searsport,Bangor, Old Town seek to extend championship streaks

Class D

Coach John Frye’s Searsport club enters the 1 p.m. clash against Bangor Christian at Saint Joseph’s College riding an eight-game winning streak capped off by Tuesday’s 13-1 win over Richmond in the D South final.

The Vikings, led by Mr. Baseball finalist Barrett Grant and sophomore pitcher Charlie Spiegel, outscored the opposition 35-4 during the tournament. Bangor Christian (14-5) won its title in similar fashion, outscoring its three opponents by a combined 31-7 after using a six-run, fifth-inning rally to surge past top-ranked and previously unbeaten Fort Fairfield 9-3 in Tuesday’s regional final.

Game Stories:

Walkoff home run propels Searsport to third straight ‘D’ baseball crown

...The Vikings third baseman was just looking to rip a base hit up the middle to give his team a chance to start a two-out rally.

“As long as it was a strike, I was going to swing easily,” said Philbrook.

But he wound up unleashing a no-doubter that coach John Frye knew was a gold-glove clincher when it left the bat.

“Once I saw the left fielder turn I knew it was gone,” said Frye, whose Vikings finish at 17-3.

“I just kept looking and when I saw it hit the trees, I was like, yeah, finally,” the soft-spoken Philbrook said.
