Greyhounds' run past Traip

...The Greyhounds drew six walks at the plate and benefited from one hit batter batter en route to a 9-0 victory over Traip Academy in the teams' regional semifinal. They will now face MVC rival Monmouth Academy in the regional final at St. Joseph's College on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

"When it's playoff time you have to capitalize on other team's mistakes," Lisbon coach Randy Ridley said. "We hit the ball, found holes here and there. Had a couple bad luck hits, overall we made good contact. That's what we needed to do. You have to put the ball in play to have a chance to win."

Monmouth rallies past Winthrop in C South baseball semifinal

..."You ask for seniors to step up at the end and he did," Monmouth coach Eric Palleschi said. "Avery doesn't like starting games. He likes coming in. It was a little earlier than we wanted to bring him in, but I thought he did a great job."

Amero also drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a two-run triple in the fifth to lead Monmouth's 16-hit attack. Trevor Flanagan went 4-for-4 with a run scored, while Avery Pomerleau had two hits and drove in three runs.

"We had one of our better hitting days today," Flanagan said. "I finally got back in my groove today. I've had a flaw in my swing that's been making me hit off the front foot, so now I keep my weight back."

Monmouth baseball rallies past Winthrop in C South semifinals
Mustangs finally break through into a regional final.

...Monmouth had lost in the semifinal round the past three years, including last season when they entered the game unbeaten.

“Every single year we’ve come close and it’s just that one thing,” said Monmouth shortstop and four-year starter Hunter Richardson. “I’ve had nightmares since of just really trying to get past that. We were the underdog in this game and it felt good to … finally break through that wall of the semifinal.”

The Mustangs fell behind 4-0 in the first inning when starter Avery Pomerleau struggled with his control and was hurt by a couple of errors. Enter Amero, who relied heavily on a 12-to-6 curveball that kept the Ramblers off-balance.

Orono baseball seniors aim to hoist a trophy for first time

ORONO - Orono Red Riots star Jackson Coutts is one of the most accomplished athletes in all of Maine. Yet you may be surprised to learn something about the Rhode Island-bound senior.

"I don't think I've won a championship of any kind, so this would be amazing to take one home for the school," Coutts.

Yes, that includes Little League.

Much has been made of this year's talented group of senior athletes at Orono High School. The core group consists of several multi-sport athletes, many of whom have yet to earn a championship in any of the sports they have played.

Lisbon's Lerette always in control

...A three-year starter at catcher, Lerette has enough of Greyhounds' coach Randy Ridley's trust to call pitches, make defensive calls and keep Lisbon's veteran pitching staff on its game.

As their cleanup hitter, he is the Greyhounds' toughest out, leading the team with a .447 average and a .552 on-base percentage. He is particularly tough with two strikes, stubbornly unwilling to let a pitcher, or an umpire, determine the outcome of any at-bat.

"As a little kid, I was taught to never leave it up to blue," he said. "If it's anything I feel like I can get the bat on, I'm swinging at it, if only to get a foul ball out of it and get another swing."

Coutts, DeSisto pace Orono past Dexter to ‘C’ North baseball crown

... That allowed the Riots to build the bridge from DeSisto to Coutts, who allowed just one baserunner (error) while overpowering the Tigers with his fastball.

“I love the fastball. Sometimes I throw a curveball just to show that I’ve got it but I usually just [live off] the fastball,” said Coutts, son of University of Maine softball coach Mike Coutts.

It was Coutts’ bat that spearheaded Orono’s winning rally in the fifth inning as he singled and stole second before DeSisto ripped a single to center to plate Coutts.

“I was so frustrated, we left so many guys on base [but] when I saw the ball go through I was just pumping my arm,” DeSisto said.

Greyhounds bust out in sixth to win first C South crown

...Top-seeded Lisbon exploded for seven unearned runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away from No. 6 Monmouth, 12-5, in the Class C South final at St. Joseph's College's Larry Mahaney Diamond on Wednesday night.

With its first Class C regional title (it's last regional title was in Class B in 1988), Lisbon (15-4) advances to the state title game at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor against No. 3-seed Orono.

"It feels amazing that we're actually getting a shot at it," said senior shortstop Ryley Austin, whose team lost last year's regional final to Sacopee Valley in its final at bat. "We've been looking forward to this since the start of the season. Since we lost last year, we wanted to be back here, and it's great to actually do it."

Big inning sinks Monmouth in C South baseball final
Lisbon plates 7 runs in 6th to pull away for regional title.

...“We couldn’t get that third out,” Monmouth coach Eric Palleschi said. “We just couldn’t make the plays. I can’t say you can’t win with five errors — neither team played a clean game — but they took advantage of the errors more than we did.

“They got that big inning and we didn’t. That’s what it came down to.”

Credit Lisbon, however, for capitalizing when the door was opened. While the Greyhounds committed five errors of their own, Monmouth came up empty in the first and second innings — leaving a total of five runners on base in the two frames — and were held scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, as well.
