Orono Baseball Looks for Program’s First State Title Since 1994

State baseball and softball games are all this Saturday, with sites at Bangor, Brewer, Augusta and Standish.

For the first time since 1994, Orono baseball will compete for the state title. They hadn’t even played in a region final since 2008. The Red Riots edged Dexter last night 2 to 1 to win the class C north title…

BDN preview: Class C

Orono has been in the mix for numerous schoolboy sports championships behind the school’s talent-laden Class of 2017.

And while that skill has been rewarded frequently in track and field, the seniors on the Red Riots’ baseball team led by Jackson Coutts and Nate DeSisto finally broke through with Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Dexter in the Class C North final and now hope to conclude their high school careers by winning state championship gold.

SJ preview: Class C Tournament: .. States 6/17 Lisbon vs Orono

Familiarity is the theme of three of the four state championship baseball games being played Saturday, whether it's familiar opponents or familiar storylines.

The one game that doesn't come close to a been there, done that feel is the Class C championship (2 p.m., Mansfield Stadium in Bangor) pitting Lisbon (15-4) against Orono (13-6). In fact, this is the first Class C state title game for both schools. Both played for championships in Class B previously, Lisbon last appearance was a loss in 1994, and last won the title in 1979. Orono won its previous appearance in 1994.

The Greyhounds feed off of a strong senior nucleus, led by pitcher/outfielder Tyler Halls, catcher Nick Lerette and shortstop/pitcher Ryley Austin.

Halls, a lefthander, started Wednesday's 12-5 regional final win over Monmouth but was lifted in time so he would be eligible to pitch on Saturday. His replacement, sophomore Lucas Francis, is also available to pitch, as is Austin and every other arm on coach Randy Ridley's roster.

Lisbon seniors hoping to leave on top

LISBON — Somewhere there are two runner-up medallions waiting for Nate Havlicek and several of his Lisbon baseball and football teammates to add them to their trophy cases.

Havlicek, a senior, doesn't know the whereabouts of the medallions, which he received as part of Lisbon's 2016 Class C South runner-up baseball team and Class D state runner-up football team. Nor does he care, because those losses, both of which came on the final play of the game, still sting.

"I didn't even take (the baseball award) home. I was so mad," said Havlicek, an infielder in baseball and lineman in football. "I didn't even take my football one home this year, either. I hate (being) runner-up. It's just the first loser in my eyes."

Game Stories

Four-run seventh sparks Orono past Lisbon for ‘C’ baseball crown

BANGOR, Maine — Victory appeared to be almost a forgone conclusion for Lisbon High School heading into the bottom of the seventh inning of Saturday’s Class C state championship baseball game.

Left-hander Tyler Halls had mastered Orono batters, allowing only an infield single and two balls out of the infield while retiring 17 in a row.

The Red Riots, their confidence shaken, desperately needed some inspiration. Jackson Coutts was happy to oblige.

The poised senior lashed a leadoff double to center field, igniting memorable four-run rally that lifted Orono to a 4-3 victory over Lisbon at overcast Mansfield Stadium.

Orono rallies for 4 in 7th to stun Lisbon

..."He pitched phenomenal. They hit the ball at the end," Lisbon coach Randy Ridley said. "We just couldn't finish it. It's not due to lack of effort or heart. I guess it just wasn't meant to be."

"He threw a great game, especially with his tempo," said Coutts, who retired the final 13 Greyhounds to pick up the win on the mound. "He works pretty fast, so as a hitter, it's tough to combat that. He has a good curve ball and he can locate his fastball pretty well."

Mixing those two pitches, Halls, a lefthander, struck out nine and allowed only two batted balls out of the infield through the first six innings on just 69 pitches.
