Cape perseveres, edges Greely to advance to semis

CAPE ELIZABETH—It was the typical, classic Cape Elizabeth-Greely baseball playoff game that we’ve grown to know and love.

The wind was howling, the teams’ fortunes twisted and turned and one run was ultimately the margin of separation.

Thursday afternoon at Holman Field, in a Class B South quarterfinal, the fourth-ranked, host Capers appeared en route to an easy win when senior ace Marshall Peterson retired the fifth-seeded Rangers in order in the top of the first inning and in the bottom half, Peterson hit a two-run single off Greely senior ace Ryan Twitchell, a third run scored on a ground out and sophomore first baseman Jameson Bakke’s bloop single accounted for a quick 4-0 lead.

York unloads during 12-run inning to reach semis

...LaBonte struck out two and didn’t allow a hit in his two innings of work against Mountain Valley. His lone blemish was a two-out walk to Jon Adley in the first.

“We don’t face pitching like that in our league (Mountain Valley Conference),” Falcon head coach Steve LaPointe said. “He was unbelievable. He was minor-league quality, I am telling you right now. He had great command of his fastball, he had a nice breaking ball and had great poise out there.”

The Wildcats batted around in its four-run first inning, highlighted by Jake Nelson’s two-run single. The second inning started with a four-pitch walk to Neilson. Mountain Valley right-hander Ethan Laubauskas then struck out Rodrigues looking on three straight pitches.

Old Town Baseball Blanks Ellsworth to Return to Region Finals

Stoddard’s 1-hitter propels Old Town into ‘B’ North baseball final

...Stoddard induced 13 ground-ball outs.

“I have a lot of trust in [second baseman Nick] Boutin and [shortstop] Ryan [Hoogterp],” said Stoddard, who plays third base when he’s not pitching and praised Jake Dubay’s work on the hot corner.

Old Town had several chances to break the game open in the early innings. But Stoddard’s counterpart, Ellsworth junior Brad Smith, got out of a first-and-second, nobody out situation in the second and escaped a first-and-third, one-out jam in the third with a double-play grounder to second.

“He’s one of their top pitchers for a reason,” Stoddard said. “He has a lot of breaking stuff that works. He changes speeds and he does really well.”

LaBonte, Wildcats bound for regional final

...Senior Trevor LaBonte earned his second win in three days and the second-seeded Wildcats advanced to the Class B South championship game with an 11-6 semifinal win over third-seeded Wells Saturday at York High School.

“There’s no rah-rahs here,” York head coach Chuck Chadbourne said after the win. “We expect to be doing this. There were no high-fives after the game. It was ‘OK, practice is Monday at 2:30. Let’s see if we can string this out to 38 and see what happens.’”

Chadbourne and his players came up with a “magic number” of 38 — the amount of practices it takes to get to the state championship.
