Yarmouth is very good, and that’s a surprise to its coach
The Clippers didn't figure to contend and ended the regular season at No. 9 in Class C South, but they're a state finalist.

...“We know Old Town is better than us and our kids just don’t care,” Halstead said. “These kids just love to compete. They play for championships.”

Yarmouth started the year with two players – Gibson Harnett and shortstop Chris Romano – with varsity at-bats, and Harnett was the only returning pitcher.

Harnett has become the ace, going 6-1 with a 1.03 ERA. He’ll get the start at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s College with closer Dom Morrill (2-1, 3 saves, 24 Ks in 221/3 innings) waiting in the wings.

Old Town, Searsport, Bangor seek to extend championship streaks

Class B

Old Town’s recent baseball successes have been well documented, from its appearance in the 2015 Senior League World Series semifinals to last spring’s Class B state championship in the high school ranks.

Now the veteran Coyotes, nine seniors strong, hope to cap off those collective careers with one more state championship celebration when they face Yarmouth in a 4:30 p.m. start from Saint Joseph’s College in Standish.

Game Stories:

Harnett pitches Yarmouth past Old Town for ‘B’ baseball title

...With one out and Ryan Hoogterp on second, Cole Daniel lifted a fly ball to medium-deep center on which Clippers’ center fielder Jack Romano had to backpedal to make the catch and subsequently fell over.

When Old Town coach Brad Goody saw that, he decided to send Hoogterp home, and he was cut down at the plate on a great relay from Romano to Chris Romano to James Waaler.

“I’ve coached [Jack Romano since 5th grade], been around, him taught him, and I had absolutely zero doubt he was going to make that throw,” Yarmouth coach Marc Halsted said.

Yarmouth got some insurance on a crazy play in the bottom of the sixth.

Yarmouth downs Old Town for first Class B state title

..."I saw the second guy score. I turned around after I made it to first base and saw the second guy score. So that was an incredible feeling," Caruso said. "It wasn't the first time we've scored two on a suicide."

Harnett said the two insurance runs loosened his nerves for the top of the seventh. Not that he let the tension rise much. A groundout and a line-out to Chris Romano were the first two outs, then Caruso secured a grounder to third and fired to John Thoma at first for the final out.

"These kids love to play for championships. They're not afraid of the big stage," Halsted said. "To get a Class B championship for these kids is something that they'll remember for the rest of their lives."

"We knew it was going to be a grind to get to this place," Harnett said, "but we believed in ourselves and we were able to get it done."

Yarmouth beats Old Town 3-0 for Class B title
Gibson Harnett tosses a two-hit shutout as the Clippers win their first baseball state championship since 1995.

...The Clippers (16-5) made all the plays in the field and used their aggressive baserunning to score two insurance runs in the top of the sixth. Not that Harnett – a senior whom Halsted called “one of the finest competitors ever” at Yarmouth – needed them. He was in a zone from the first pitch, throwing just 75 pitches – only 37 over the final five innings – while striking out three, walking one and hitting one batter.

“He did a great job mixing and matching and keeping guys off-balance,” said Old Town Coach Brad Goody. “He’d start the pitch on the plate and move it off. He did a great job mixing speeds and moving locations and making it tough for us today.”

Yarmouth baseball shocks the world, reaches Class B pinnacle!

...For two weeks, truth was stranger than fiction, improbability reigned supreme and everything that had to go right went right for Yarmouth’s baseball team, which, as a result, authored a story so impossible to believe that Hollywood producers would have rejected it out of hand.

The Clippers, seeded ninth for the Class B South playoffs, capped a playoff run for the ages and produced the program’s signature moment Saturday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond on the campus of St. Joseph’s College in Standish, winning the Class B state title for the first time, thanks to their usual base-running derring-do and yet another spectacular team-wide effort.

Yarmouth was able to “Row the Boat,” dethroned Old Town and now belongs to the ages and the story of how the Clippers wound up at the pinnacle deserves retelling after retelling.
