Trojans edge Mariners in competitive prelim playoff
No. 11 Oceanside pushes No. 6, senior-laden host MDI to limit in loss

...On Monday, the opponents threw their top hurlers as the Mariners started Logan Sheridan, while the Trojans countered on the hill with Seth Clark.

“We knew that they were very good and that this was going to be a pitching game,” said Oceanside coach Don Shields. "The Clark kid was phenomenal. He did the job he needed to do and Logan was phenomenal and Jack [Freeman] came in in a tough situation when Logan was banged up. I thought all three guys pitched great baseball today. They got the one hit they needed to get early to get the one run, and we just couldn’t get that hit.”

Tim Mazzeo, Titus Kaewthong and Michael Norton Jr. singled for Oceanside, while Andrew Shea (double, run), MacLean Shea (single) and James McConomy (single) led Mount Desert Island at the plate.

Yarmouth ousts Leavitt in Class B preliminary round contest

...The senior needed just 89 pitches, having only one three-ball count the entire game.

"When getting first-pitch strikes, it's real helpful. I was able to keep my pitch count down. Not having any walks takes the pressure off our guys and they're able to make the plays behind me," Harnett said.

"Gibson pitched great today. A ton of first-pitch strikes, putting pressure on their hitters," Clippers catcher James Waaler said.

Mountain Valley upsets Morse in Class B South baseball prelim

...The Falcons plated the first run of the game in the top of the first. Morse (11-6) tied the game at one in the bottom of the first on a Taylor Shaw RBI single.

John Pepin earned the save after he got himself into — and out of — a jam to start the seventh. The Shipbuilders loaded the bases with no outs, but Pepin was able to shut the door. He struck out two batters in a row and a groundout ended the threat and the ballgame.

Hunter Ames recorded the victory, going five innings while striking out five for his sixth win of the year. He's now 6-0.

Spruce holds off feisty Freeport

...hat wasn’t going to happen against the obstinate Falcons (6-10-1), who climbed to within one run of the Phoenix before falling to Spruce, 13-8. The Phoenix move on to face host and third-ranked Wells High School (10-5-1) on Thursday in a quarterfinal game.

“We used all three of our pitchers today and they all contributed,” Spruce Mountain coach Brian Dube said. “This team (Freeport) wouldn’t go away. They kept battling back and I think that’s what the playoffs are all about.

“The same time we kept adding on and it was a good thing because in the end, we needed it. Like I said, these guys didn’t want to go away and they made it interesting in the end.”

Pellerin sharp as Waterville baseball advances
Junior ace fans 10 to lead Panthers past Foxcroft.

...“Anything. Fastball, curve, they were both working well,” Pellerin said. “Fastball was a little more accurate, but my curve made them swing.”

Against Foxcroft Academy on Tuesday afternoon, Pellerin was in complete control. The junior righty gave up just four hits, with only one of those leaving the infield, while striking out 10 and walking two in a complete game 3-0 win.

No. 8 Waterville, now 13-4, will play at No. 1 Old Town (13-3) on Thursday. No. 9 Foxcroft ends the season at 10-7.
