Races for top spots heighten in North baseball ranks

The high school baseball regular season entered its final two weeks Monday with very little decided at the top of the standings in northern Maine.

Class B: This division’s standings boast a unique look as Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference members Nokomis of Newport (10-2), Gardiner (10-3) and Erskine Academy of South China (10-3) occupy the top three spots followed by Penobscot Valley Conference entries Hermon (9-2), defending state champion Old Town (9-3) and Ellsworth (9-3).

York vaults into first place in latest Heal point standings

...It was York’s sixth straight win and they improved to 10-3 on the season, vaulting them into first place in the Class B South Heal point standings, just ahead of Carrebec/Madison (10-3).

The Wildcats have three games left in the regular season; Wednesday at Poland (3-10), Friday at home against Greely (8-5), and next Wednesday at Lake Region (5-6).

“There’s a little psychological advantage of (being the top seed),” Chadbourne said. “We’d love to have that, but we’re just hoping to get a top-four spot. We want to go watch someone play that has to come play us; that sets us up where two wins and we’re in the (Class B South) finals.”

Greely remains the favorite

York enters regular season finale riding eight-game win streak

...“I think anyone who gets into the tournament knows that if you get into the top four it gives you a little bit of an advantage because in all likelihood, it’s your No. 1 against someone else’s No. 2,” Chadbourne said. “My No. 1 is pretty darn good and I’ll take my chances. I am happy the kids have put themselves in this position.”

Chadbourne thinks the top four seeds, at the end of the regular season, will feature Carrebec/Madison, York, Cape Elizabeth and Spruce Mountain; with Wells falling to the No. 5.

“That’s all assuming Greely doesn’t hold serve against (Class A) Falmouth, the undefeated and top seed in Class A South.

“There’s going to be shuffling around, that’s for sure,” Chadbourne said.

Prelim: Presque Isle 6, Gardiner 3

Errors hurt Gardiner baseball in preliminary round loss to Presque Isle
Tigers make five errors in three innings in slippery conditions

...This game came down to which team would take advantage of errors. Each team made five in the slippery conditions, but it was the Wildcats who made the most of them. They scored four unearned runs off Gardiner starter Hunter Chasse while committing all five errors in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

“Condition-wise, we would have liked to play this on a nice sunny day,” Gardiner coach Russ Beckwith said. “Our group usually is very strong defensively and that’s what kind of let us down today.”

The Wildcats started sophomore Jonah Hudson and he pitched effectively although he, too, was victimized by errors, two in the third when the Tigers scored a run and two more in the sixth when they scored twice.
