Bangor, Old Town, Searsport seek to extend championship streaks

Storylines abound as the high school baseball season comes to its conclusion with four state championship games around the state Saturday.

Perhaps the biggest story will play out at Morton Field in Augusta, where Bangor High School will attempt to win its fourth consecutive Class A state title when it faces Falmouth in a 2 p.m. rematch of the 2016 final.

A win would make the Rams the first Class A baseball team to win four straight state titles since Bangor won consecutive crowns between 1994 and 1997.

In my 40 plus years of viewing high school baseball, this may have been one of the best and most exciting games I have witnessed. During the last four pitches of the game, there was dead silence as each pitch was being delivered. I have never witnessed that before. Incredible. Both teams were really good. I have seen Bangor three times during the season and Falmouth two. Both have really talented players. Robbie Armitage, Falmouth SS, is very talented. Good hands and an above average arm. His brother, Reece Armitage can swing the bat. Although he did not get any hits today, he is going to be a good one at Marist. Best overall player I saw was Kemble for Bangor. Kid can flat out pitch and play the outfield. Catcher for Bangor, Fournier, is a plus defensive catch and throw guy. Best catcher I saw this year. That game had four of the finest players I have seen this year. Add in a number of other very good players and you had the making of an outstanding game. All players and coaches should be proud of their efforts and competitiveness. Just an tremendous high school championship game. Awesome job guys!!

bulldog. Great description of the Bangor-Falmouth game as I listened to the game on the radio. Great Bangor comeback after being down 3-2 with one out in the bottom of the 9th.

Seeing that you posted above that Bangor catcher Derek Fournier was the best catcher you saw this past season, are you surprised that he did not make it as one of the 24 North Maine Senior A B All-stars players selected?

The only Bangor player to make the squad was Kemble.

I understand that Bangor floundered a little losing 3 of their last 4 regular season games, but still Derek Fournier is without a doubt is one of the best, if not the best catcher in the state at the high school level as you stated in your post above.

Sure Derek wouldn't trade his fourth straight state championship for an All-Star spot though.

These Senior All-Star teams should be picked the Saturday night after the state games in the afternoon, after the State games so as to include all post season games.

OR

If not after the state games how about after the regional final games on Wednesday. Votes could be submitted by computer by the voters and be totaled either Wednesday evening after the regional finals or Saturday after the state games.

They could be totaled on Thursday if after the Regional finals or Sunday after the state games..

Post season one and done pressure play should be included.

Just a suggestion from an old former player, coach and Athletic Director.

Game Stories

Four in a row: Ninth-inning rally lifts Bangor to Class A baseball title

...“The whole time you just knew it was going to come down to the wire,” said Payne, a senior second baseman. “Both teams were playing their best and only one was going to win and Derek got the big hit and did it for us. It’s crazy.”

The majority of this game was a pitchers’ duel between seniors Noah Cowperthwaite and Guarino, a left-hander already named this year’s Gatorade Maine player of the year.

Cowperthwaite scattered 11 hits over 8 1/3 innings while striking out one batter and walking two, while Guarino yielded eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks over eight innings.

“I knew they were a good-hitting team,” said Cowperthwaite, a right-hander. “But the defense came up with big plays to get us out of a couple of innings, we did it as a team.”

Bangor wins Class A title in 9 innings
The Rams rally to edge Falmouth, 4-3, with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and win their fourth straight state championship.

...Falmouth looked in command this time, scoring once in the top of the ninth. But the Rams rebounded with back-to-back doubles and then, with bases loaded and one out, Derek Fournier’s game-winning bloop single.

“They were coming inside on me all game,” Fournier said. “I just fisted it right off the handle. I thought it was too high. When I saw it drop, holy cow, I was the happiest man alive.”

Falmouth ace Cam Guarino lasted eight innings (106 pitches), giving up two runs on eight hits. Robbie Armitage relieved in the ninth, throwing heat.

“We had it where we wanted it, Cam and then Robbie,” Falmouth Coach Kevin Winship said. “I thought Robbie did well. But those guys, they can swing it … That was a tough one.”

Bangor’s blend of experience, youth produces another baseball state title

...“[Friday] night we were talking about greatness and, not to get too philosophical, but a lot of people want to be great, but what really counts is who do you want to be great for,” said Bangor coach Dave Morris. “We had a motto [Saturday] that we were going to be great for each other and you could see that with a lot of the unselfishness and the kids really going at it for each other: Charlie Budd’s catch, the way Nick Cowperthwaite pitched, Zach and Tyler, everything George Payne did, you can go right down the lineup.”

Perhaps that shouldn’t have come as a surprise, given the program’s 13 state championships since 1970, including a previous run of four consecutive titles between 1994 and 1997.

“The more innings everyone got the more we felt we belonged on that team,” said Ireland. “The younger guys like myself were kind of nervous at the start of the season but as we got into it and played more games it got more comfortable and enjoyable. It was fun from the start and it was a heck of a ride. It was amazing.”
