Time to think playoffs; Spring season winds down-Portland edition

Baseball

Portland’s baseball team has been flying under the radar so far this spring, but the Bulldogs emerged as a full-fledged contender last week as they extended their win streak to seven by downing host Westbrook (8-1) and handing visiting Cheverus its first defeat, 3-1. Against the Blue Blazes, Donnie Tocci earned his third win, Dom Tocci and Will Snyder had three hits apiece and Cam King drove in three runs. In the win over the Stags, Gio Ruotolo improved to 5-0 after throwing a four-hitter and Donnie Tocci delivered a clutch RBI triple to put Portland ahead to stay.

“They went into the game thinking they were going to come out on top and I went in thinking I’d come out on top,” Ruotolo said. “I knew I was undefeated on the mound and I knew I had a great defense. I knew someone would leave today no longer undefeated and I think I wanted it a little bit more than they did.”

“As Portland kids, we don’t really like Cheverus and I don’t think they like us either,” Donnie Tocci said. “The rivalry is huge. We flew under the radar and came in and won.”

Races for top spots heighten in North baseball ranks

The high school baseball regular season entered its final two weeks Monday with very little decided at the top of the standings in northern Maine.

Class A: Three-time defending state champion Bangor (11-1) is in control of its destiny, but the route to the top spot is filled with potholes.

Coach Dave Morris’ club will play its final four games on the road against opponents with a combined 34-15 record. The Rams travel to Auburn to face No. 4 Edward Little (10-3) on Monday, then visit a No. 10 Messalonskee of Oakland (4-8) team battling for its playoff life Wednesday before a makeup game at No. 3 Oxford Hills of South Paris (9-2) on Friday.

Pitching depth a key element of ‘A’ North race

...Whether the tandem is Peter Kemble and Nick Cowperthwaite of Bangor, Jack Corey and Alex Stevens of Brewer, Alex McKenney and Casey Sudbeck of Hampden Academy or Jarod Norcross Plourde and Damien St. Pierre of Edward Little of Auburn, most of the divisional leaders feature pitching strength as they position themselves for a postseason run.

“We’ve definitely seen two good pitchers from Brewer, Cowperthwaite was good against us and obviously Kemble from Bangor is strong, and then teams like Edward Little and Oxford Hills (of South Paris) are always going to have kids who can go out there and compete,” said McKenney after pitching Hampden to a 5-1 win over Brewer on Monday night.

“That’s why the league is competitive this year. I don’t think anyone knows who’s going to win states this year right now. I think anyone can go out and beat anybody in the first round.”

Bangor baseball embracing pressure ahead of playoffs

BANGOR - Bangor baseball once again finds itself atop the Heal Point standings headed into the final stretch of the regular season, instantly making it a team with a target on its back. The Rams are closely followed by the Brewer Witches, Edward Little and Oxford Hills, rounding out a top 4 group of teams many consider to be some of the best in the North region.

So how will the Rams deal with that pressure?

Brewer baseball overcoming adversity to push playoff race

BREWER - Class A baseball has been ruled by the Bangor Rams for the past few years, but the Brewer Witches have always been there to push their rivals, and this year is no different.

Brewer currently sits second behind the Rams at 12-3, but that record is made even more impressive by the fact that the team just played its first true home game of the season on Thursday.

Brewer Witches savor Senior Night homecoming

...The victory over Bangor improved the Witches’ record to 13-3 — including 11-3 away from home — and leaves the team at least temporarily atop the Class A North Heal Point standings.

Whether Brewer finishes first or second likely depends on how second-place Oxford Hills of South Paris fares in its regular-season finale at Mt. Ararat of Topsham on Thursday afternoon.

Either way, the team already has surpassed the expectations of many who follow Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference baseball most keenly.

“We weren’t on the radar at all,” said coach Corey. “Nobody had us pegged. Edward Little, Oxford Hills, Messalonskee and Bangor, those were the teams people were looking to be challenging at the top.
