PORTLAND—The coaches and members of Cheverus’ baseball team will tell you that chemistry is the reason for the Stags’ fast start this spring, but the truth is more tangible.

Cheverus also has benefited from a deep pitching staff, strong defense and timely hitting and all of those triumphant elements were on display Wednesday when the Stags held off visiting Windham on a cloudy day at Kevin MacDonald Memorial Field.

Brooks one-hits SP, keeps Cheverus undefeated

SOUTH PORTLAND—For two years, while recovering from an arm injury, Jared Brooks could only daydream about taking the mound in a big spot and mowing down the opposition.

Brooks, Cheverus’ senior ace, got that opportunity Thursday afternoon at Wainwright Farms in a pivotal midseason showdown against South Portland and after two terrific efforts earlier this spring, he was simply transcendent.

And as a result, his team remains perfect.

Cheverus blanks Deering to cap superb week

PORTLAND—In the span of a week, Cheverus’ baseball team went from being off to a good start to cementing its status as one of the elite powers in Class A South.

Saturday morning, the Stags punctuated their week to remember by avenging last year’s playoff ouster behind yet another pitching gem, this one from senior Jack Casale.

Hosting Deering, which was playing without senior standouts Colby Dame and James Sinclair, Casale got out of trouble in the top of the first thanks to his catcher, Logan McCarthy, who threw out a runner trying to steal, and in the bottom half, Cheverus’ bats erupted against Rams junior starter Joe Pelletier.

... “I had both of my breaking balls working today, slider and curveball. That’s the first time this year I’ve had that, and that helps off the fastball,” said Casale.

The senior right-hander struck out eight and with no walks over his seven innings.

“Typically, (Casale) puts more balls in play, but he overmatched the bottom of their order today so he got more strikeouts than he normally does,” said Cheverus Coach Mac McKew. “He’s just a very efficient, effective pitcher.”

Casale also contributed two hits, knocked in a run, scored twice and stole two bases.

Brooks spins one-hit gem in Memorial Day matinee win over Biddeford

BIDDEFORD—Last Saturday, Cheverus’ baseball team suffered its first (and to date, only) loss of the 2017 season, at rival Portland.

This Saturday, the Stags had an early wakeup call to travel to St. Louis Field to meet Biddeford in the penultimate game of the regular season and several players got a jump on the day, arriving at school early to take extra batting practice.

It certainly paid off, as Cheverus produced a dozen hits off two Tigers’ pitchers and that offense proved more than enough for senior ace Jared Brooks, who came within one wind-blown double of throwing a no-hitter as the Stags enjoyed an easy victory.
