Portland stops South Portland, 5-2
Senior Gio Ruotolo goes the distance for the win.

... “Just come out throwing strikes. (Coach Mike Rutherford) thinks that the curveball is my best pitch and it was just keeping them off balance and working low in the zone,” Ruotolo said. “He’s using me as a senior leader this year.”

It was the first time this year a South Portland game had been decided by more than two runs.

“You’ve got to give credit to Gio,” Rutherford said. “Here’s a kid who threw three innings last year and he had a huge win against Scarborough, beat them 3-2, and (South Portland) is going to be good.”

Portland hands Cheverus first setback

PORTLAND—Coming into Saturday afternoon’s showdown at Hadlock Field, there was plenty of buzz around the undefeated Cheverus baseball team.

The Portland Bulldogs, who have come of age faster than anyone expected this spring, took note and went out and promptly knocked the Stags from the ranks of the unbeaten.

Portland, behind senior ace Gio Ruotolo, played a flawless defensive game and after four scoreless innings, finally solved standout Cheverus senior pitcher Jared Brooks in the bottom of the fifth.

Portland ends Cheverus’ unbeaten run
The Bulldogs hand the Stags their first loss of the season and extend their own winning streak to nine with a 3-1 victory.

...“(Cheverus had) the momentum, they (felt) great, then all of a sudden in the seventh inning, after they couldn’t get another run across, 3-1 felt like 9-1,” said Portland Coach Mike Rutherford. “You could see it in their faces, and we knew they had the bottom of the order coming up. They needed (to score) at least one more run (in the sixth inning).”

Ruotolo improved to 5-0. He walked one and struck out six.

“(Ruotolo) pitches to contact and knows he has a great defense behind him,” said Rutherford. “He pitched like an ace, number one. For us to win anything in the playoffs, he’s going to have to win two games. Right now, he’s pitching like one of the best pitchers in the state.”

PORTLAND—A better than expected regular season had an ideal ending for Portland’s baseball team Friday evening when the Bulldogs put a cherry on their sundae by beating their oldest and fiercest rival.

Battling Deering at Hadlock Field on a night when every type of weather was on display, Portland did just enough to earn a bye into next week’s quarterfinals.
