Scarborough and the elements prove too much for Deering

SCARBOROUGH—It was a day not fit for man or beast.

Nor as it turned out, for pitchers or fielders.

Monday afternoon at Packy McFarland Diamond at the Kippy Mitchell Sports Complex, Scarborough hosted Deering in a pivotal early season baseball contest, but Mother Nature made life miserable for all on hand.

With the temperature in the low 40s, a steady mist falling and a breeze blowing in out of the east making it feel even colder, everyone that had to handle the ball struggled in a 2 hour, 20 minute marathon. ... r-deering/

... “I was real proud of our guys because we’ve had a couple rough games,” said Scarborough coach Mike D’Andrea. “That’s kind of been our m.o. this year, to bounce back. We ran into a tough pitcher, the Curtis kid. He gave up two in the first inning and pretty much dominated the rest of the way.

“But we hung in there. Our pitchers kept us in there. When Cam Seymour came in and was strong the way he was, you could feel the momentum shift.”

After giving up a two-run double to Pratt in the top of the first, Curtis, a big junior, locked in. He retired 10 of 11 batters and didn’t allow a runner to reach second base after the first, getting help from catcher Holden Jackman, who erased two would-be base-stealers. ... lass-south
