Winthrop:: routs Mustangs, 15-5

Winthrop fends off Mountain Valley

...That last go-ahead run stuck, and Winthrop held on for a 5-4 victory in an MVC matchup.

Bennett Brooks' two-out single to right in the bottom of the fifth — after the Falcons (2-1) scored twice in the top half of the inning to tie the game 4-4 — brought home Maguire Anaszewski, and Greg Fay allowed just a harmless two-out single in the top of the seventh to keep Mountain Valley away for good.

"That's always key. Somebody scores, come back with one, and we did," Winthrop coach Marc Fortin said. "We had two outs when we scored that final run. Got a guy on, next thing you know we had a little something cooking and scored the run. It ends up being the winner."

Ramblers rally to rout Rebels

...It took the Ramblers some time to warm up to the idea of playing in the far-from-ideal conditions.

It also took them some time to warm up on the Kents Hill School turf field, but once they did, they were tough to stop.

Winthrop rallied from a 5-0 deficit and ran away from Telstar to invoke the 10-run mercy rule in the sixth inning of a 17-7 victory.

"We were told (Sunday) that this was canceled because the field was being used, and then we got told after lunch (on Monday) that it was back on," Winthrop coach Marc Fortin said. "There weren't that many happy faces on the bus. We had a rough start, but we pulled it out."

Winthrop overcomes Monmouth's quick start

... Richardson moved to third on a groundout, then Hickey walked Avery Amero on a 3-2 pitch. A sacrifice bunt put Amero into scoring position, but Hickey induced a fly out from Kane Gould to end the inning.

"You'd like to get a little bit more. You'd like to get a run or two every inning," Monmouth coach Eric Palleschi said. "Some days you do, some days you don't. Today we didn't."

That Hickey made it out of the frame giving up just the one run was a good sign for the Ramblers (5-3).

"Sometimes Jacob just throws, but today he pitched," Winthrop coach Marc Fortin said. "It would have been easy to lose — when they start hitting them early, sometimes he just starts throwing, and they just keep rocking him. That didn't happen. First inning didn't look good. They had their wheels on, they were making contact, and we were lucky to get out of there."

w/ video: Winthrop Ramblers roll over Seahawks, 16-6

...The 10-run mercy rule was invoked Friday, May 19 as the Winthrop Ramblers baseball team ran over the Boothbay Region High School Seahawks, 16-6.

The Seahawks got off to a quick start with a two-run burst in the first inning sparked by singles by Zach Blackman and Cameron Crocker. They were brought home on a single by Hunter Crocker.

The lead did not last long with the Ramblers batting around in the third inning, scoring seven runs. They added another six runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth.

Comeback effort salvages doubleheader split for Winthrop baseball
Hall-Dale rolls behind Jackman in 1st game before Ramblers rally in nightcap

...Bennett Brooks’ two-run single in the sixth inning broke a tie and helped the Ramblers rally from four runs down to beat Hall-Dale, 8-4, salvaging a split of a doubleheader between the Mountain Valley Conference rivals after the Bulldogs earned a 2-0 win in the first game.

There was an unmistakable air of relief as the Rambler players left their wet and muddy field after the final out. The rally had prevented them from falling to .500, and instead allowed them to keep pace with the top teams in a tightening Class C South race. Winthrop (7-5) currently sits fourth in the standings, while Hall-Dale (9-5) is second.

“It’s huge. This division’s really close and we need all the points we can get,” Brooks said. “Getting at least one of the wins was what we needed to do today.”

Ramblers rout Mustangs, 15-5

...Matt Ingram led Winthrop's nine-hit attack with two hits, including a double, two runs batted in and three runs scored. Carson Camick added two hits, scored twice and drove in three.

"All through the order we've been hitting the ball," said Ingram, a senior catcher. "We got the bats going once we saw (Monmouth's mistakes) and we just kept going."

Both teams are 9-6 with one game left to play in the regular season. But the Ramblers, who beat the Mustangs, 3-1, earlier in the month, opened up some space between themselves and Monmouth and also leapfrogged Hall-Dale into second place in the C South Heals.
