Thompson Wins Play of the Week

The winner of the play of the week is Justin Thompson.

The Schenck pitcher gets the line drive off his foot but makes the play anyway.

It was a cold day so it might have hurt a little bit.

Baseball Reaping Benefits from Senior League World Series

... n between pitches much of the time was spent reminiscing about the Senior League World Series. Unfortunately 2016 would be its final year in Bangor as Little League made the decision in late August the event would be moving to Easley, South Carolina. We made mention of the opportunities the youngsters playing in front of us had. Mansfield had become a second home to many of these players as Old Town played in the 2015 Senior League World Series. A number of the Hermon kids played in last summer’s World Series, combining with Hampden to form the host contingent.

Over the first nine years of the World Series in Bangor, organizers and promoters had to continually remind all who would listen this was not a Bangor event. A Bangor team served as hosts for seven of the first nine series. It was a run highlighted by their climb to the championship game in 2010, managed by St. Pierre. The title game versus Aruba was played before an overflowing crowd in front of an international television audience. This wasn’t supposed to happen. The host team was supposed to maybe be competitive, perhaps win a game, above all be gracious hosts, and call it good. This was the script for the first eight years of the SLWS in Bangor.

Nokomis, Foxcroft making noise in ‘B’ North baseball

The top of the Class B North baseball standings have taken on a different look in the last few days.

Nokomis Regional High School of Newport and Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft, middle-of-the-Heal-point-pack teams beginning last week, suddenly find themselves inhabiting two of the three spots in the division entering Saturday’s rain-threatened schedule.

Nokomis, which used a late run last spring to advance to the regional semifinals, is now 6-0 this spring, with coach Jared Foster’s Warriors using an 8-6 victory over Waterville on Wednesday and a 9-1 win at Leavitt of Turner Center on Thursday to advance from sixth place to first in the standings.

Forecaster: Spring athletes shine despite rain and cold-Portland edition

Cheverus’ baseball team has emerged as a top contender in the early going.

Last week, the Stags improved to 5-0 by eking out victories at Thornton Academy (3-2) and at home over Westbrook (10-9). Jared Brooks threw a three-hitter and struck out 10 and Dom Casale drove in the winning run against the Golden Trojans. In the win over the Blue Blazes, a Brooks three-run homer helped build a 6-2 lead, but Cheverus couldn’t hold it. The Stags then had to rally late and won the game on a walkoff, two-run single from Jack Casale. Cheverus hosted Windham in a makeup game Monday, visited Marshwood Tuesday, goes to South Portland Thursday (see theforecaster.net for game story), hosts Deering Saturday (see theforecaster.net for game story) and plays at Noble Tuesday of next week.

Deering had a wild week, losing at Scarborough in the rain, 12-3, then outslugging host Massabesic, 20-10. In the loss, the Rams committed six errors and left nine runners on base.

Skowhegan’s McSweeney is our Play of the Week

lay of the Week this week goes to Skowhegan’s Garrett McSweeney. More than 71 percent of the votes for this play to get the force out at home against Brewer. They didn’t give up a run in the inning because of it. Congrats to Garrett our Play of the Week and thanks for voting.
