Pastime Club sweeps Rogers in American Legion baseball doubleheader

..."When they come to play, they're the best team in our zone," Rogers Post manager Dave Jordan said. "Today, they came to play. I know they'd lost a few games recently, but today, when they came to play, we saw what they can do. They have many different ways they can score. They can manufacture runs, they have speed, they can put bunts down, and they're very patient at the plate."

Pastime also displayed some depth Saturday. All 15 players who suited up for the Lewiston-based team had at least one at-bat. But the key to the win," Pastime manager Jake Brown said, was remembering how to be patient at the plate.

"I told the guys after that loss to Locke Mills (on Wednesday) that if they could learn something from that game, it could be good for us in the long run," Brown said. "We've really worked hard on having quality at-bats since that game. We're the kind of team that feeds off each other. If one or two guys get going, the rest of the team will feed off of that."

Ararat wins Cal Ripken 10U state championship
Ararat's 11-run rally, sparked by Andrew Clemons, is the difference in the state championship game.

Andrew Clemons doubled twice in the bottom of the fifth inning, drove home three runs and scored twice as Ararat staged an 11-run rally to beat Sacopee Valley 14-12 in the Cal Ripken 10U state championship game on July 5 in Oxford.

Ararat, which draws players from Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Harpswell, Richmond and Topsham, will represent Maine in the New England regional July 14-20 in Marlborough, Massachusetts.

Ararat entered the fifth inning trailing 12-3. Clemons’ second double of the inning drove in two runs to give Ararat a 13-12 lead, and Kenny Mecham followed with his second RBI single of the inning.

Andrews wallops Coastal

PORTLAND – A hobbled Coastal Landscaping fell at home against Andrews Post on Tuesday evening, July 11. Coastal posted their biggest inning in the third, when Chandler Hartigan, Kolby Lambert and Riley Bartell all scored, but Andrews had already tallied eight of their own by that point. 13-4 the final.

“We’ve played them a couple times,” said Coastal head coach Dan McCarthy of Andrews Post. “The last time we played them, we beat them in 13 innings. They’re a tough team; when they’re full-staff – they’re most of the better Portland and Falmouth players – they’re a solid team.”

Coastal found themselves, on Tuesday, facing a problem many summer ball teams face, and all too often: a short bench. Whereas the team actually counts 18 kids on its roster, only nine were able to make the game.

Rogers sweeps Bessey Motors in American Legion Baseball doubleheader

...Tyler Libby ripped a single in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 2 to lift Post 153 to a 7-6 win and a sweep of Zone 2-leading Bessey Motors. Rogers held on in game 1, also, for an 8-5 win.

But it was Bessey that started things off in a hurry in the waning sunlight.

Shortstop Janek Luksza slung a two-out single into center. Luksza’s single was followed by a double by first baseman Ashton Kennison and just like that the visitors had an early lead.

Rogers’ pitcher in Game 1, Libby, was able to keep two runners on to end the inning, and gave his offense a chance to go to work.

Cole Lockhart racks up 5 RBIs for Augusta.

...Lockhart was an offensive force for Augusta Elks, going 2 for 2 with five RBIs in a 17-3 victory over Gardiner at Hoch Field. The game ended after five innings.

Lockhart’s first hit came in the first inning when he nailed a Nic Berube pitch into right center field, clearing the bases with a three-run double.

“I was expecting fastball, I got it,” Lockhart said. “It was a pretty nice hit. I’ll take it.”
