American Legion baseball: Carson, Bessey Motors shut down Pastime

PARIS — Colton Carson started Wednesday's American Legion baseball game mad, but finished it quite happy.

The Pastime batters, meanwhile, were left scratching their heads.

Carson tossed a one-hitter and was supported by a strong defense in Bessey Motors' 3-0 victory at Tim Bryant Memorial Field.

"He was (on). He threw very well," Bessey Motors assistant coach Lance Bean said. "He had all of his pitches throwing over the plate. Something he's been working on is location, and looked really good today."

Hampden gets past Skowhegan 4-3 in Legion action

HAMPDEN - Light issues and lack of umpires pushed the start of Thursday's Legion game between Skowhegan and Hampden back a bit, but those who caught the shortened seven-inning game got a good one.

Skowhegan jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a throwing error, but Hampden would remain poised and take home a 4-3 win.

Rogers Post takes two from Franklin County

AUBURN — Twice Rogers Post pitcher Gavin Bates faced a batter with no outs and the bases loaded, and twice found a way to strike out the next three batters.

That's the type of dominant night it was for Bates and Rogers Post as they won an American Legion baseball doubleheader Thursday against Franklin County, 8-0 and 4-3.

To start the first game, Franklin County was able to grind out three walks against Bates to load up the bases. The control wasn't quite there yet and Rogers Post was suddenly in an early hole.

That's when Bates struck out the next three batters on his way to 16 total.

Augusta Legion rallies from deep hole to top Gardiner late
Elks come all the way back from 7 runs down for win

...The Elks stormed all the way back from an 8-1 deficit, and bolstered their prime position in Zone 2 by upping their record to 7-1.

“A lot of these players are veteran players that have been playing for me for three years,” Rodrigue said. “They don’t give up. I told them that when the game was over, they could have easily checked in right there in the second inning and given up. But they kept scrapping, and to be honest with you, I had faith the whole game.”

The second inning tested it. The Elks put themselves in position for the comeback with a list of mistakes that allowed Gardiner (0-7) to seemingly blow the game open. There were four walks, a balk and two errors, and even the routine plays seemed an adventure as Gardiner sent 13 men to the plate in what was ultimately a seven-run frame.
