York shuts down Sacopee Valley
Trevor LaBonte pitches a four-hitter in a 5-1 victory.

... LaBonte walked three and struck out nine for the Wildcats, who are expected to be a contender in Class B South.

“We just wanted to pour it into the strike zone and let the defense play, pitch to contact, and our defense played really well today,” said LaBonte.

The top three batters in the lineup for Sacopee Valley (1-1) went 0 for 10 with six strikeouts. The bottom four batters went 3 for 8 with three walks.

“(We) weren’t overmatched. I guess that’s the biggest positive I saw out of (the game),” said Sacopee Coach Chris Burnell, whose team is the reigning Class C state champion.

York's relentless bats down Cape Elizabeth

...CAPE ELIZABETH—York’s offense is potent enough without help.

When you give the Wildcats extra outs or let them off the hook when you’re at-bat, you’re doomed and Cape Elizabeth learned that the hard way in a midseason baseball showdown at Holman Field Friday afternoon.

The Capers were shaky defensively and on the basepaths early on, didn’t do senior starter Marshall Peterson any favors, and York soon seized control.

Rodrigues sparks York baseball past Traip

Rodrigues helped his own cause by going 4 for 4 with two RBIs, part of York’s 17-hit attack against five Traip Academy pitchers. The Class B Wildcats wrapped up their 13-3 baseball win over the Class C Rangers when Shane Pidgeon’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning triggered the 10-run rule.

“I felt really good, hitting-wise,” Rodrigues said. “Pitching, I was a little shaky at times, but I pulled through and I was just determined to get the win. I kept my focus on the game the whole time.

“When you go 4 for 4, that’s always a good thing. That was probably the best offensive day I’ve had all season.”

York scores 4-2 win over Greely
The Wildcats win their fifth straight and send the Rangers to a third consecutive loss.

...LaBonte, a right-hander who will start a postgrad year at Bridgton Academy in the fall, allowed four hits, struck out eight, walked three and hit a batter.

“I’m a competitor, and I just want to go out there and attack the strike zone,” LaBonte said.

LaBonte was aided by a blustery wind that blew in from center field.

“LaBonte was tough,” Greely Coach Derek Soule said. “You know, he had a nice wind behind his back and he’s already tough enough. (The wind) held up some of theirs and some of ours, but it was a nice wind behind a pitcher who already has great stuff.”
