Falmouth blanks error-prone Greely in battle of aces

... CUMBERLAND—The sun was shining, two of the state’s best pitchers were plying their trade and all was right with the world if you were a baseball fan in Maine Tuesday afternoon.

In the final meeting for the foreseeable future at Twin Brook Recreation Center between ancient rivals Falmouth and Greely, everyone knew coming in to the game that with Yachtsmen senior University of New Haven-bound southpaw Cam Guarino going up against Rangers senior University of Rhode Island-bound flamethrower Ryan Twitchell that runs would be at a premium and whichever team that buckled first defensively would likely go down to defeat.

That team would be the host Rangers.

Unbeaten Falmouth gets 10th win vs Greely
Cam Guarino gets his fifth victory, winning a pitchers' duel with Greely's Ryan Twitchell by striking out eight and walking one.

... University of New Haven-bound Cam Guarino outdueled University of Rhode Island-bound Ryan Twitchell to lead the Yachtsmen to a 4-0 win over the Rangers in a Western Maine Conference baseball game.

Guarino, a left-hander, allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked one for his fifth win of the season; Twitchell, a right-hander, gave up six hits, struck out 12 and walked none to fall to 3-1.

“That was a good win for us,” Falmouth Coach Kevin Winship said. “Anytime you face a pitcher of Twitchell’s caliber and beat him, it’s good for the program and for the team.”

Falmouth finds a way to stay unbeaten
Cam Guarino allows his first earned runs of the season, but the Yachtsmen rally for a 5-4 win over Wells.

...“Robbie picked up that the third baseman was charging, and he kind of took third base on his own,” Winship said.

Fortier followed with a fly ball deep enough to center to enable the tying run to score while Reece Armitage advanced to third. Griffin Aube hit another sacrifice fly to right to drive in the winning run.

Guarino retired six of the seven batters to face him in the fifth and sixth innings to record his sixth win.

Robbie Armitage, a hard-throwing right-hander who will go to Marist in the fall along with his brother, struck out two of the three batters in the seventh to pick up his second save.
