Falmouth blanks GNG in opener, gives Winship 100th win

GRAY—The weather was more suited for the gridiron than the diamond when Falmouth’s highly touted baseball team opened the 2017 season Wednesday afternoon with a victory.

And not just any victory.

A victory sparked by the latest gem from the program’s ace.

And a landmark victory as well.

Facing Gray-New Gloucester, the visiting Yachtsmen gave senior Cam Guarino the only run he would need when senior second baseman Colin Coyne scored on a ground out in the top of the first inning.

Falmouth continues fast start with win at Cape Elizabeth

CAPE ELIZABETH—Though it has yet to play at home or in ideal conditions, Falmouth’s highly touted baseball team is off to an expected fast start this spring.

Monday afternoon at Holman Field, in their final visit as a member of the Western Maine Conference, the Yachtsmen did just enough with the bats and got yet another stellar pitching performance to improve to 3-0 on the young season.

Falmouth got the only run it would need in the top of the second inning, unearned, as senior rightfielder Marcus Cady hit a sacrifice fly to score junior first Griffin Aube for a 1-0 lead.

Re: Falmouth:: Cam Guarino throws a no-hitter

Postby Tom Nolette » Tue May 02, 2017 4:41 am

Brilliant performance on a dreary day: Falmouth’s Cam Guarino throws a no-hitter
Guarino allows just a first-inning walk and an unearned run in an 11-1 win over Cape Elizabeth.

...Pitching in a steady mist, Guarino threw a no-hitter to lead the unbeaten Yachtsmen to an 11-1 baseball win Monday against Cape Elizabeth.

Because of the wet conditions, Guarino, who will play at the University of New Haven next spring, wasn’t able to use his full repertoire. But he threw well enough to limit the Capers to three base runners in the five-inning game, which ended in the bottom of the fifth because of the 10-run mercy rule

“I just focused on throwing strikes,” Guarino said. “Fastball. Fastball. Fastball. I barely threw any change-ups. Just a few curves. My hands were a little cold, so I couldn’t really lob it in.”
