Old Town baseball and softball win big over Orono

ORONO - Old Town baseball and softball entered Monday as defending state champions, and they left Orono looking like they will have a chance to repeat that feat.

The Coyotes baseball team routed rival Orono 13-0 at Mahaney Diamond, while across the complex, the softball team left with a big 10-1 win as well.

Old Town opens baseball title defense by beating Orono

...Three pitchers backed by errorless defense combined to throw a four-hit shutout and eight different batters contributed to a 15-hit offense as coach Brad Goody’s club scored a 13-0 victory over Orono at Mahaney Diamond on the campus of the University of Maine.

“You really never know what you have,” said Goody, whose team never trailed after scoring twice in the top of the first inning. “I knew they’d be a tough team but we’re just happy to get that first one out of the way.”

Senior right-hander Ethan Stoddard, who earned the pitching win in Old Town’s 12-2, five-inning victory over Freeport in the 2016 Class B state final, escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first and went on to limit Class C Orono to two hits over four innings with seven strikeouts and four walks.

Old Town baseball team scores Senior Day victory over Orono

OLD TOWN, Maine — The Old Town High School baseball Class of 2017 already has experienced considerable success, including last spring’s Class B state championship.

There has also been another trip to the regional final and a third semifinal appearance, as well forming the nucleus for the Canoe City’s 2015 Senior League World Series team.

The most veteran of this year’s Coyotes celebrated their achievements so far — there is one more postseason opportunity looming, after all — on Wednesday by pounding out a 17-3, five-inning Senior Day victory over Class C Orono.

The win leaves Old Town with an 11-3 record good for second place in Class B North with regular-season road games remaining at John Bapst of Bangor next Wednesday and at Mount Desert Island the next day.
