Brewer outlasts Bronco-Hermon in extras of Senior League tourney

BANGOR - The Maine District No. 3 Senior League title is up for grabs, and while this year's win won't punch an automatic ticket to the World Series, every win gets a team closer to regionals.

Brewer managed to outlast Bronco-Hermon in 10 innings, wining 3-2 Thursday night. Bronco-Hermon now goes to the loser's bracket, where it will face Holbrook with the season on the line Saturday.

Boosted by rally, Ararat 10Us prepare for regional Cal Ripken tournament
Richmond-heavy team scored 11 runs in fifth inning to erase nine-run deficit in state title game.

His team was getting beaten — routed, in fact. But Ararat 10U Cal Ripken coach Chris Farrell saw a sign that indicated his team wasn’t finished just yet.

“They came in and I saw a little bit of a spark, so I gave them a little bit of a fifth inning pep talk,” he said. “All of a sudden, boom, they started hitting the ball like crazy.”

What Ararat did was rally from a nine-run deficit with an 11-run fifth inning, leading it to a 14-12 victory over Saco Valley, a state championship and a berth in the regional tournament in Marlboro, Massachusetts starting today.

Augusta reigns with three district champions and representatives in state Babe Ruth tournaments
13U, 14U and 15U teams won district titles, while Central Maine 13U competes for regional berth as well.

The Augusta 14U Babe Ruth team has been here before. Last year, in fact. And things couldn’t have gone better.

Augusta came out on top in the 13U state tournament last summer, taking first place en route to a berth in the New England regional championship. The players are now a year older, and coach Jason Douin likes their chances as they aim to be best in the state once again.

“We’re hungry,” he said. “We want to get back to that because we feel that we have a team that can compete for a regional title.”

BDN recaps: Brewer all-stars defeat Bronco-Hermon in 10 innings

BANGOR, Maine — Trevor Pearson’s RBI single in the top of the 10th inning provided the winning edge for Brewer as it defeated Bronco-Hermon 3-2 in 10 innings in a District 3 Senior League game Thursday night.

Brewer (2-0) had tied the game in the seventh on Jo Cyr’s run-scoring triple. Evan Andrews threw 1 ⅔ innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win.

Nick Lorenzo doubled and singled while Mark Mailloux had two singles plus an RBI for 2-1 Bronco-Hermon.

PORTLAND 10, AUGUSTA 1: Luke Hill had three hits, including a double, as Portland beat Augusta in its opening game at the state tournament in Augusta.

Dom Denico and Patrick Rush each had two hits for Augusta.

AUGUSTA 6, SANFORD 2: Alec Byron and Patrick Rush each hit a pair of singles as Augusta bounced back from its opening loss.

PPH Recap:: Portland moves on to Babe Ruth state title game
Portland will play Auburn for the championship in the 13-15 division.

AUGUSTA — Portland advanced to the championship game of the Babe Ruth baseball state tournament for 13- to 15-year-olds with a pair of wins Sunday, beating Apple Valley 9-2 and Sanford 4-1 to finish round-robin play with a 4-0 record.

Against Apple Valley, Portland got four hits from Chris Cimino, three each from Brian Riley and Nate Rogers and two from Luke Hill. Sonny Villani pitched a complete game.

Rogers drove in two runs and Cimino had two hits against Sanford. Garon Kelley pitched five innings and Hill earned the save.

The championship game is 4:30 p.m. Monday at Morton Field.

AUGUSTA 18, TRI-COUNTY 1: Riley Geyer, Akira Warren and Nick Barber each drove in three runs as Augusta won the state tournament for 14-year-olds with a mercy-rule win in Augusta.

Tri-County was undefeated in pool play, including a 4-1 win over Augusta on Saturday, but Augusta got off to a quick start in the championship game, scoring twice in the top of the first inning.

Augusta broke the game open with a three-run fourth and a four-run fifth that made it 10-1. An eight-run sixth inning put the mercy rule in effect when Tri-County was unable to mount a comeback.

Logan Dupont pitched a six-hitter to earn the win.

Caribou set to host annual Little League tournament

CARIBOU, Me (WAGM) - The Bob White baseball fields will be a busy place this weekend. The annual State Farm Little League tournament is being played beginning on Saturday. Rene Cloukey has a tournament preview.

(Gary Marquis):"We got 14 teams coming for our annual State Farm tournament. Out of the 14 nine of them are coming from downstate. We have one coming from Bar Harbor over Newport and the Brewer area. They are all coming here and staying in our hotels and eating at restaurants gassing up their cars. It is going to be a busy weekend for Caribou.
