Schenck senior tops 300 career strikeouts

Schenck of East Millinocket senior right-hander Ryan Jurgiewich achieved a unique career milestone during his most recent pitching start for the Wolverines’ baseball team.

Jurgiewich struck out 18 batters while pitching a complete-game three-hitter as coach John Montgomery’s club edged visiting Piscataquis of Guilford 3-1.

That increased his career strikeout total to 303, and while no records are kept on such statistics statewide it is believed to be a rare feat given that teams in Maine play a maximum of 16 regular-season games and top pitchers generally work in no more than half of those games — meaning that the most prolific of four-year varsity pitchers likely would get no more than 30 starts and fewer than 200 innings of work.
