PI baseball team bolstered by pitching depth

...The coaching duo of Derrick Kinney and Curt Paterson hopes the Wildcats can build on their strong finish last season, which included a prelim victory over Gardiner and a close loss to Hermon in the quarterfinals. The team went 10-8 overall.

Presque Isle must replace its starting first baseman and top hitter, Nick Bartlett, who graduated along with starting outfielders Jake Kinney and Brad Kinney and reserves Grant Bridges and Brad McMann.

The coaches are still tinkering with the starting lineup, but seniors R.J. Gross (.360 batting average, six doubles, 11 runs scored and nine RBI in 2017) and Adam Paterson (.255, eight runs); juniors Jonah Hudson (.370, 10 stolen bases and 12 runs), Torey Levesque (.302 and six steals) and Dakota Morrow (.176 and three RBI); and sophomore Connor DeMerchant (.391 and seven runs) are veterans who all will play key roles.

Caribou looks to rebound from 2-14 season

...Like all the other Aroostook County teams, the Vikings have been confined to a gymnasium since practices began in mid-March. Hunter said they have made the most of their time indoors.

“The workouts have been going really well,” Hunter said. “We have been concentrating on a return to fundamentals, with lots of instruction and getting our pitchers regular work and we are getting as much hitting as we can get in the batting cage.”

Caribou finally was able to get outdoors Saturday with an exhibition doubleheader against Oceanside in Rockland and it gave Hunter a chance to evaluate individuals in game situations.

“We have 18 players, so I’m trying to take a look at everyone in order to come up with our best starting lineup,” Hunter said.

Katahdin baseball eyes longer playoff run

... “We are excited about the upcoming season,” coach Thoreson said. “We return six of our nine everyday starters from last year as well as 88 of 98 innings pitched last year. Our main goal in this program is to challenge each other every day to become better men and to prepare our young men for the world once the last pitch is thrown.”

Last year, the Cougars finished 10-4 in the regular season, which earned Katahdin the No. 3 seed in Class D North and a first-round bye. But the Cougars fell to No. 6 Shead, 9-7, in the quarterfinals.

“We suffered a heartbreaking loss at home in the quarterfinals last year and our young men are using that loss as fuel to work this preseason,” the coach said.

Coach likes makeup of Washburn baseball team

... “I think that this team collectively is one of the most upbeat teams I’ve been able to coach,” he said. “Their positive attitude has definitely carried over from last year.”

Many starting jobs are still available, but junior Braedon Campbell is one of the top offensive players from 2017 and Goodwin has high hopes that he will repeat his success at the plate. The squad’s lone sophomore, Colby Hewitt, is a top pitching prospect and Carvor Pendexter, a junior, could have a breakout season with the bat.

Konner Jordan is the team’s only senior. Other junior players are Jaedon Alvira, Steven Nader, Patrick Saucier and Noah White. Seven freshmen are on the roster: Chase Bates, Aiden Churchill, Gavin Dunagan, Julian Echieverria, Russell Farley, Joshua Jackson and Shayne Scott.

“I think a lot of my players have their own specialty that we will need to try to harness to be successful this year,” Goodwin said.

Hodgdon baseball is short on numbers, not talent

... “Basically, for me, numbers are down due to Greater Houlton Christian Academy having a team, and a large number of players graduating from last year’s team,” he said.

Last season, Hodgdon finished 11-4 in Class D North, which earned the Hawks the No. 5 seed in the region. Hodgdon blasted past No. 12 East Grand, 17-7 in a preliminary playoff and bested No. 13 Schenck, 8-4 in the quarterfinals before falling to top-ranked Fort Fairfield 5-0 in the semifinals.

Many key members of that squad are gone, due to graduation, including Ben Tuttle, Jordyn Merritt and Dillan Buzzell.
