York wins 19 events in three-team meet

... The Wildcats won 19 events, including Jake Martin (110 hurdles, discus, shot put), Joe Goulette (100), Brady Harrod (racewalk), Laura Kenealy (mile), Erin O’Donnell (400), Audrey Grimes (300 hurdles), Zach Westman (300 hurdles, long jump, triple jump), John O’Brien (800), Hayley Smith (200), Nick Rainforth (200), Brendan Mather (2-mile), Phoebe Slovenski (pole vault), Griffin Bean (pole vault), Jon Burke (high jump), and Kathryn Miller (2 mile).

Athletes who reach state standards are invited to June’s state championship meet. So teams qualify as many athletes as possible in order to maximize their chances for a state title. York added 16 spots in their first meet.

Automatic state qualifiers include Miller (2 mile), Smith (200, 100/300 hurdles), O’Donnell (400), Grimes (100/300 hurdles), Slovenski (pole vault), Martin (110 hurdles, shotput), Westman (110/300 hurdles, long jump, triple jump), Burke (110 hurdles) and Bean (pole vault)

Brewer, Caribou impress at first PVC track and field meet

... The Witches girls team topped Caribou while the boys narrowly fell, but one of the early highlights saw the Witches snag a win in the 4x800 relay after Asa Honey made a late pass to clinch the win for Brewer.

It was a gutsy move...but he knew he had to go for it.

"I could tell that he was sort of slowing down at that point. And I just wanted to get past him. So why not do it there, I guess?" Honey said.

Athletes get to explore new events in Waterville Relays
Meet's team-based nature forces some to put athletes in unfamiliar disciplines.

... Barlow, normally a miler, got another crack at the dash as part of Gardiner’s sprint medley relay team at the Waterville Relays on Saturday, one of many athletes trying their hand in different events at the annual early-season meet.

“It was different. I usually pace myself and I can’t pace myself in the 100. I have to do a full 100 percent,” Barlow said. “It’s nice to try something new.”

The Waterville Relays’ relaxed and unorthodox structure makes it a perfect event for teams to get creative and athletes to take chances. Each event, both on the track and in the field, requires at least three athletes for a team to be able to score based on the combined finishes, and that means some schools have to mix-and-match from other fields in order to have enough to be counted. Sprinters try throws. Distance runners run sprints. Throwers run relays
