This Week’s Recruiting in Review

The second weekend of the April evaluation period is set to tip-off tonight with local teams traveling to Indianapolis, Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Providence.

But before we officially turn our attention toward the second of two weekends it's time to take one collective look back on all of the new offers and info to come out of last week's session.

The biggest winners were Putnam Science guard Hamidou Diallo and South Kent guard Tremont Waters, who run with New York Rens and Expressions Elite respectively, who pulled in offers from both Duke and Kentucky.

Recruiting Round-Up

It has been a busy seven days on the recruiting wire, and that's to be expected in the week that follows the final weekend of the April evaluation period. Here's a look back at some of the recent updates:

After landing offers from Duke and Kentucky following the first session of EYBL with Expressions Elite, South Kent point guard Tremont Waters added another offer from Kansas last Thursday;

Northfield Mount Hermon and Albany City Rocks sniper Andrew Platek added an offer from Princeton earlier in the week and then saw his recruitment go to a brand new level with an offer from North Carolian on Wednesday while Stanford came next the following Monday;

Commitment Catch-Up

It has been a busy week for the class of 2016 as names seem to be flying off the best available list with each passing day. Here's a look at some of the other recent commitments in the class that have yet to come across the ticker:

Alpha Diallo wasn't the only Brewster Academy product to finalize his plans last week. Jake Rudolph and Sam Kiley are also now off the board.

Wells, Wilson headline latest ‘16 pledges

James Wells 2016
It was only five days ago that we published our last commitment catch-up and yet in the days since the decisions have continued to come in at a rapid rate.

Among the most notable within the last few days is that of Worcester Academy senior forward James Wells, who will head north to Canada to star at McGill University,

Ironically, Wells' decision will actually bring him closer to his home in Vermont than he has been in the last two years while starring for Worcester Academy. His high school career began at Rice Memorial High School in Burlington, where he was identified as one of the top prospects in the state of Vermont at a young age. He opted for a move to the prep ranks following his junior season and so he transferred to Worcester Academy, despite it being located almost four hours away.

Canterbury’s Bruton Headlines Latest Batch of Commitments
DeAnte Bruton 2016

Nichols College landed an important piece in their 2016 recruiting class over the weekend when Canterbury School post-graduate guard DeAnte Bruton came on board.

Bruton previously starred at Ledyard High School before graduating last year and opting for a post-graduate years in hopes of building up both his body and his recruitment.

He put up huge numbers against some of the top programs in New England this year as the slippery southpaw proved that he was capable of scoring points and making plays at the highest of levels.

Commitment Catch-Up

Early decision applications have started to come back and that means there's been a rush of division III commitments in recent days. Here's a look at some of the most notable ones to come across the wire:

Trinity College has landed an impactful pledge from Tabor Academy big man Akim Sanni. The 6-foot-8 big man, who ran with Expressions Elite on the EYBL circuit, is a physical specimen who has continued to develop his skill set and gradually expand his game away from the basket. He saw consistent interest at both the division I and II levels over the course of his career and has the type of physical tools you don't see from a player his size at the D3 level.

Commitment Catch-Up
Conor Harkins 2017

The last couple of weeks have brought another round of division III commitments, or at least brought some previous commitments to light. Here's a look at a few recent pledges who all have a chance to be impact players.

Greenwich senior guard Conor Harkins made a verbal commitment to Swarthmore back in September. At the time it flew under our radar, but since then Harkins has done anything but. He's opened his senior season with a number of loud performances, including a game winning buzzer beater over Darien and strong showings against state powerhouses Notre Dame West Haven and East Hartford. A product of High Rise Elite on the grassroots circuit, Harkins is highly skilled with a equally high basketball I.Q. He's a high level shot-maker from behind the three-point line, capable of playing both on and off the ball and an undeniable steal at the division III level.

Recruiting Updates

This is the time of year when college coaches return to the recruiting trail in full swing. Yes, the college season is barely past the midpoint but for many programs, the win-loss record already paints a telling story and so the priority becomes adding reinforcements for next season.

Even those programs that are succesful thus far look to be proactive, if not for the coming season then for the coming recruiting class. In other words, while some programs are fighting for what's left in the class of 2017, others are getting an early jump on 2018.

Collectively, those two conditions have led to several recent scholarship offers:

Wheeler; Say Latest to Come off Board

Two local division III programs landed important commitments this week as Wilbraham & Monson forward Dakota Wheeler and Brewster Academy guard Semih Say came off the board to WPI and Brandeis respectively.

Wheeler is currently in his second season at WMA, after arriving from nearby East Hampton, Massachusetts. The 6-foot-5 forward is a pure shooter of the basketball, not just from behind the three-point line but also off the dribble in the mid-range area as well.

A senior captain for the Titans, Wheeler is one of a select few veterans on an otherwise young team that has exceed expectations in the second half of the season with recent wins over Cheshire Academy and Kimball Union among others.
