Sea To Summit Triathlon
In so many ways, Layton is king of fitness mountain

One of Midcoast's most physically fit people, Rockport man first in grueling event

... Layton, who also has finished first in a bundle of Midcoast triathlons and road races over the years, also competed in the Sea to Summit last year, as he finished third among 57 participants. He said he was “not as fast” in that event, but refined his technique mightily over the calendar year.

“I improved my bike a lot,” said Layton, who added improving on the cycling portion was a goal of his from last year. “And I actually was faster on the run too. I thought by me pushing [it] on the bike harder I’d be slower on the run, but actually I was faster this year than last year.”

Layton, who has averaged about five marathons a year for the past decade, works out twice a day between his job at Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding and just tries to eat “good, quality food” along the way.

“Training is a part of my lifestyle,” he said. “I do it every day.”
