Hawks, Knights prep for wrestling regional

...Rivals Marshwood and Noble are eyeing Saturday’s Class A South championship at Marshwood (9:30 a.m. start) with the objective of winning the regional title, but more importantly moving along as many wrestlers as they can to the Class A state meet on Feb. 17 in Sanford.

Noble coach Kevin Gray feels the Knights can potentially advance 12 of the 14 weight divisions (they do not have a rep at 106 pounds or 220).

Marshwood coach Matt Rix is thinking seven or eight for the Hawks, who have won six straight regional titles and five of the last six state crowns. Last year Marshwood had 12 wrestlers advance from regionals to states, while Noble had eight. The Hawks also won both regional and state titles by large margins. Don’t expect that this year.

“We’re working hard and trying to get healthy with the colds and flu going around,” Gray said. “Hopefully we’ll be healthy on Saturday.”

Ellsworth ‘technician’ seeking fourth straight wrestling state title

...Peyton Cole, while certainly not lacking for strength, has taken a slightly different approach to a career on the mat that leaves him within reach of a fourth consecutive individual state championship.

Just call the Ellsworth High School senior “The Technician.”

“He never gets out of position, that’s the big thing,” said Ellsworth head coach J.F. Burns after Cole captured the 145-pound title during the recent Penobscot Valley Conference championships.

“Even in his matches [Saturday] there were a couple of moments when it looked like his opponent might get somewhere but they didn’t. That’s where he’s so good, he can always stay in a favorable position and that makes the difference.”

Wrestlers gear up for regional tournaments
Class A North shaping up to be quite a battle.

...“A North is about as deep as I’ve seen it in all my years as a head coach,” Cony coach Shawn Totman said.

The meet features the teams who competed in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference meet last weekend, minus the KVAC Class B teams. That could alter the results since Class B wrestlers won three titles in the championship round that included both classes.

Host Oxford Hills won the KVAC A title followed by Nokomis, Skowhegan and Cony. The Vikings not only hold a home advantage but have the most top four seeds (9) followed by Nokomis (8), Cony (7) and Skowhegan (6).

Three wrestlers in the meet — Skowhegan’s Samson Sirois (132 pounds), Cony’s Nic Mills (195) and Quentin Richards (152) of Nokomis — won state titles last year while Skowhegan’s Ricky Oberg (120) and Erskine’s Jake Peavey (285) were runners-up.

A North wrestling:
Nokomis nabs crown; Oxford Hills ties for third

...PARIS — For the first time in school history, Nokomis is a regional wrestling champion.

The Warriors claimed the Class A North championship by 24.5 points over runner-up Cony in the 14-team meet held Saturday at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. Buoyed by four individual regional champions and four other podium finishers across the 14 weight classes, Nokomis made a disappointing showing at the conference championships a week earlier a distant memory.

“It’s the first time we’ve even been close,” Nokomis coach Scott Preble said. “The group of kids are maturing. I only have two seniors, but they have very vast wrestling knowledge and they’re like a family.”

Class A South wrestling: Quite a day for the Knights

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — Enough was indeed enough.

After six years of watching rival Marshwood dominate the regional wrestling tournament, Noble High School finally had its day on Saturday.

And what a day.

The Knights won five regionmal titles and had 10 wrestlers qualify for next Saturday’s Class A state tournament in Sanford. Noble also took the regional team championship with 200.5 points, its first since 2011, while Marshwood finished second qwith 150.5. Sanford was third with 123.

“We’re always seen as the underdogs recently,” said Noble senior Hil Keisker. “To quote Jason Kelce, ‘Underdogs, we always go out there. You take away our food, we’re going to be hungry and we’re going to be angry and we’re going to come out running.’ That’s what we did and that’s what we showed today.”

Noble wins A South title
The Knights have five individual champions on their way to the regional title.

...“I would much rather take a team win over a personal goal,” Cote said. “I mean, I have personal goals. I want to win a state title as a freshman. But winning states as a team would mean so much more.”

Then came Sam Martel and Pilecki pinning their Marshwood foes Liam Coomey and Matthew Thompson at 126 and 132.

Noble’s other individual champs were Jonathan Grenier, who pinned top seed Jeremy Sendrowski of Scarborough in the 145-pound final, and Hil Keisker at 160.

Marshwood’s champions were David Spinney at 138 and defending state champion James Thompson at 195.

“With the numbers we have I felt we did just as good as we could,” said Thompson. “Second place is good with eight or nine guys wrestling.”

Class B South Wrestling: Wells defends title, Mountain Valley runner-up

...Mountain Valley’s other four champions finished their day with a pin, too —Vinny Deroche (106), Evrit Roy (126), Anthony Mazza (138), and Nathan White (145). Nathan LeClair pulled off a surprise for the Falcons with a pin of Dirigo’s Blaine Wilkins in the consolation round final, Dolloff said. Alex Shorey (fourth at 132) also qualified for states.

“The kids wrestled great today. They wrestled great last week,” Dolloff said. “We’re down a few because of grades and stuff, but they came out firing. To get five kids in the finals and they all win with pins, you can’t ask for more than that.”

“Hopefully we can get five finalists next week,” he added. “We’ll be right in the mix.”

Dirigo will send eight wrestlers to states, led by its lone champion, Jon Wainwright. He won the 132 title with a pin of Madison’s Joshua Savage at 4:52.
