LEWISTON - The entire world is buzzing about the upcoming superfight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Connor McGregor, but Maine is set to get its own superfight Saturday night.

Maine-native Bruce Boyington is set to square off with renowned boxer Russell Lamour in the ring at New England Fights 29 in Lewiston. It will be a six-round middleweight boxing match, serving as the headliner for the hybrid event hailing from the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. Lamour (15-2, 7 knockouts) has fought internationally, while Boyington's MMA career (in which he sports a 14-9 record) has taken him across the world in the cage.

Bellator veterans highlight NEF 29 card

...Five fights with tri-county connections, NEF’s own boxing-versus-MMA battle in the ring and an amateur title tilt in the hexagon between two undefeated foes with a combined age of 90 share the spotlight on a busy evening.

“Ray Wood coming back to Maine to compete against Brazil’s Alexandre Bezerra is a very big deal,” NEF co-owner and matchmaker Matt Peterson said. “The fight made Sherdog.com’s ‘Top 10 Tussles To Watch in June,’ which is an international search of the top 10 bouts around the globe.”

Wood carries a two-fight losing skid into his homecoming. Getting back on track is no gimme against Bezerra, a world-class competitor who has fought nine times under the Bellator banner.

NEF 29: Bezerra takes down Woods; Jones KOs Spires in 4 seconds

...If you were looking down at your fight program, you missed Josh Jones’ lightning right-hander knock out Anthony Spires four seconds into the first round of an amateur 185-pound MMA match.

Jones’ right was that fast and devastating, leaving the crowd equally stunned as well.

“I set a record (fastest knockout),” Jones, 29, an Erskine Academy graduate, said. “I was waiting to see what he (Spires) was going to give me.”

Wood falls in Maine return; NEF schedules August card in Bangor

...Among other highlights during the hybrid show was the announcement that the next New England Fights show, NEF 30, will be held at the Cross Insurance in Bangor on Saturday, Aug. 5. That show will mark NEF’s third event in Bangor and be staged a year to the day from the promotion’s last Queen City appearance, the “Dana White: Lookin’ for a Fight” show held on Aug. 5, 2016.

Longtime Camden Hills of Rockport wrestling coach Patrick Kelly became the NEF amateur lightweight (155-pound) champion with a three-round unanimous decision over Rafael Velado.

The 52-year-old Kelly improved his record to 4-0 by dictating a pace in which both fighters remained standing and winning the striking battle against Velado, a black belt in jiu-jitsu who is now 4-1.
