Age a number, MMA debut a ‘rush’ for 50-year-old Camden Hills wrestling coach

LEWISTON, Maine — Patrick Kelly’s walk from the locker room to the cage wasn’t just to make a statement about age. Nor was it necessarily about winning, or solely the pursuit of a new challenge within a continuing quest for fitness. It was all of the above and more that spurred the Rockport school teacher and veteran wrestling coach from Camden Hills Regional High School to make his mixed martial arts debut on the recent New England Fights’ “NEF XIV” card — at age 50...

Patrick Kelly : Rockport fighter, a ‘man who knows no limits,’ wins MMA title at 52

When Patrick Kelly was winning a New England wrestling title at the University of Maine more than three decades ago, the aches and pains inherent in that achievement surely suggested that such combat endeavors weren’t going to become a lifetime sport like golf or tennis.

So even as Kelly continued to enter grappling tournaments 15 and 20 years later, much of his competitive side inevitably turned to a highly successful coaching career at his alma mater, Camden Hills Regional High School, where he has contributed to 15 state championship teams as a head coach or as an assistant.

He was inducted into the Maine Amateur Wrestling Alliance Hall of Fame in 2007, but try telling Kelly — or anyone he has sparred with in mixed martial arts — that his playing days are over.

Mixed Martial Arts
Kelly returns to octagon to claim NEF light heavyweight title
Thanks to hard work, dedication, Windjammer wrestling coach punches up success in return from injury

...The fight between the opponent went the full three rounds and, in the end, it was Kelly, also unbeaten and a biology teacher at Camden Hills Regional High School, that had his hand raised in victory, as he nabbed the NEF light heavyweight title.

“He was the undefeated champ [and] he’s a heck of a mixed martial artist,” said Kelly of Velado, who is now 4-1. “But there’s the thrill of victory and agony of defeat. Somebody’s going to come out of that cage with a loss. We were just two warriors going head-to-head. He wanted to keep the belt and I wanted to take it away.”

Kelly (4-0), who also is the Windjammer wrestling coach and has led the school to multiple state team titles, said despite his preparation, “It didn’t come easy.
