Maine moose hunt starts in far north of state
The state issues 2,740 moose permits this year, the fewest in 12 years.

AUGUSTA — One of Maine’s most popular hunting seasons is getting started as hunters in the northern reaches of the state start seeking out moose.

The moose hunt in far northern and northeastern Maine started Monday. The session ends on Oct. 3. Three other sessions are scheduled for other parts of the state in October and November.

There is also a Maine “resident only” day in a limited part of the state on Oct. 31.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife issued 2,740 moose permits this year. That is the fewest in 12 years. Biologists say parasites such as winter ticks are a threat to northern New England’s moose herd
