Bounty on Coyotes? Is it time?...

DIFW issued fewer Doe Permits in 2014...Concern from recent harsh winters and that dang predator, the wily coyote.

I've talked with folks all over this state and the consensus is the same....fewer deer sightings, fewer yearlings and 1 1/2 year old deer. I spoke with a popular deer registration station in central Maine. She noted Thanksgiving Day registrations were down as was registrations for the year. We reminisced on the days when Route 139 from Benton to Unity was lined with vehicles...not anymore. A farmer in central Maine noted many yearlings dragged into dens in June and July.

These coyotes are big predators. They only need to run a deer off the wintering yard trail and the feast is on, albeit an agonizing one for the whitetail deer.

Maine's whitetail herd is in a state of emergency. Bounty on coyotes may help to sustain our whitetail herd. Our whitetail hunting heritage is at a crossroads in Maine.
