Bear season starts Monday morning

Bear season kicks off throughout Maine at 5:20 a.m. Monday. The general hunting season runs through Nov. 30.

Hunting with bait is allowed from Monday until Sept. 21. Hunters may use dogs from Sept. 9 to Nov. 1.

Maine's bear population has increased by more than 30 percent since 2004 and is estimated at more than 30,000 animals.

Maine's bear hunting practices back in the crosshairs
Almost 10 years after failing to abolish baiting and other methods, animal-welfare activists want to revisit the debate: Are these cruel or are they viable wildlife management tools?
By Deirdre Fleming

Bear hunters in Maine again find themselves in the sights of animal-welfare advocates who contend that some of their practices are inhumane.

Less than 10 years after Maine residents voted down a divisive referendum effort to abolish the use of bear hunting with bait, dogs and traps, the debate has re-emerged.

As hunters prepare for the first day of bear season Monday, sportsmen, politicians and animal-rights advocates are gearing up for a renewal of the referendum battle that spiked passions on both sides in 2004.

Hunting: Rewards can come hard for bear hunters
By Bob Humphrey

Crickets. Their monotonous drone filled the air with a trill of white background noise so steady and constant I didn't notice it until it stopped. Suddenly the air was deathly still, which could only mean one thing. Something was stirring, unseen and unheard in the dense forest undergrowth.

The bear didn't appear so much as it materialized, right before my very eyes. Where once there was empty space now stood a four-legged black ghost of the forest. Even in the cricket-less silence it made no sound as it deftly set each padded foot down, every step bringing it inches closer. Then it paused, still well out of bow range, slowly turning its round, black head and tan muzzle first one way, then the other. It turned to look back and in flash was gone.

Outdoors in Maine: Maine's bear hunt

Maine's annual bear hunt began this year on August 26 and runs through November 30. It is legal to hunt bears over bait this year from August 29 to September 21. Houndsmen may hunt bear with dogs from September 9 to November 1. Trappers can harvest a bear in September and October.

Maine has a large and healthy black bear population, the largest in the eastern United States. Eclipsed only by our November deer hunt, the early fall hunt for black bears is a major contributor to the state's rural economy. Bear hunting brings jobs and income to a hard-pressed rural Maine.
