Can anyone challenge undefeated Penobscot Valley for ‘D’ North softball title?

With their 8-1 victory over defending two-time Class D North champion Stearns of Millinocket on Tuesday, the undefeated Howlers of Penobscot Valley High School firmly entrenched themselves as the team to beat in the division.

Freshman pitcher Leine McKechnie fired a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts for the 12-0 Howlers, who have outscored their opponents 156-16.

But who poses the biggest threat to PVHS of Howland, which seeks its first regional championship since the program claimed back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013?

PVHS beat Richmond in the 2012 state championship game but Richmond has captured the last four championships.

Double play, bunt hits spark Ashland past Central Aroostook in softball prelim

...With the bases loaded and one out in a tie game in the top of the fifth inning, Hornet center fielder Morgan Doughty caught a deep fly ball off the bat of the Panthers’ Maci Beals. Doughty quickly started a relay to the plate to retire baserunner Annika Nicholas, who was attempting to tag up from third base.

“Morgan’s my best player,” said Ashland coach Terry Hunter. “She’s fast and solid out there. [Beals] smashed it but I still had a feeling she was going to get to that ball.”

The inning-ending double play preserved the 9-9 tie and Ashland used some small ball to manufacture the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth, giving the hosts a 10-9 victory in the third meeting of the season between the Aroostook County rivals.

Shields sisters providing a battery for charging Buckfield

...The sisters do more talking after the game.

"We talk about it a lot. We go home and tell each other what we think and how each other did, let each other know the truth," Hannah said. "Tell it how it is."

Both sisters said they don't have any problem being critical with the other.

They both had their work cut out for them in Abby's second start of the season. After finishing off that first game against Rangeley, then another win over the Lakers three days later, the Bucks had to face rival Richmond for the second time this season, but the first with Abby toeing the rubber.
