Bucksport and Madison set for highly-anticipated C Softball title game

BUCKSPORT - The Maine Principals' Association announced due to weather, Saturday's Class C State Championship matchup between Bucksport and Madison has been moved to 2 p.m. at Coffin Field in Brewer. Of course, that means little to those involved, so long they receive an opportunity to actually play.

Bucksport senior center fielder on a roll entering state softball final

Bucksport High School softball coach Mike Carrier hasn’t been surprised by senior center fielder Madysen Robichaud’s clutch hitting in the playoffs.

“She has nerves of steel. She really does,” said Carrier.

Miss Maine Softball finalist Robichaud has been the offensive catalyst behind Bucksport’s three Class C North playoff victories, which have propelled the Bucks to their third straight regional championship and fifth in six seasons including 2011, when they were in Class B.

Game Stories

Bucksport rallies to edge Madison for ‘C’ softball championship

...Junior catcher MaKenzie Smith came to the rescue, dropping a soft, two-run single into right field to give the Bucks a 2-1 victory in a rematch of last year’s state final won by Madison.

“We’ve played a lot of games where we’ve had that one [big] inning when we all come together. And that was that inning,” said Smith.

Smith admitted stepping to the plate feeling “quite a bit of pressure.

“I had to go up there knowing I was going to hit it or I would have, frankly, freaked out,” she chuckled.

Madison softball drops title game to Bucksport
MaKenzie Smith's 2-run single in fifth inning lifts Golden Bucks.

... BREWER — Revenge isn’t the noblest motivator, but for the Bucksport High School softball team, especially pitcher Katelin Saunders, revenge was what stoked the competitive fire all season. The Golden Bucks were runners up in the Class C state championship game last season, and as they spent all spring trying to get back, they hoped it would be Madison, the team that took the title last year, in the opposing dugout.

“It motivated me extremely, because I knew I had to pull through. It was very important to me to pull out this win,” Saunders said.

Saunders certainly did her part. The junior was dominant Saturday afternoon at Coffin Field, striking out 13 while allowing just two hits to lead Bucksport to a 2-1 win and the Class C state crown.

Coffin Field crew had a busy day preparing waterlogged field for C softball final

BREWER, Maine — Early Saturday morning, there was standing water over a healthy portion of the infield at Brewer High School’s Coffin Field courtesy of a downpour Friday night into Saturday morning.

Maine Principals’ Association representatives had decided Friday to push the Class C state softball game between Bucksport and Madison back from noon to 2 p.m. due to the impending rain and then, late Saturday morning, it was decided to push it back to 4 p.m.

“It was the worst I had ever seen the field on the day of a game,” Brewer softball coach Skip Estes said.

“There were two to three inches of water on it in some areas,” former Brewer High School Athletic Director Dennis Kiah said.
