Bucksport tops Orono to reach ‘C’ North softball final

...Robichaud said she was surprised Walker caught the ball in the first inning.

“I knew she had touched it but I didn’t think she had held it because she was looking beyond the fence. But I definitely made sure on the next one,” grinned Robichaud, whose fifth homer of the year gave Bucksport a 4-1 lead.

“The pitch was a little outside but it wasn’t bad. It felt good when I hit it,” said Robichaud.

“It was a great hit,” said Orono coach Kristen Espling.

Bucksport junior right-hander Katelin Saunders went the distance for the win. She surrendered eight hits and struck out three while walking two. She threw 98 pitches, 68 for strikes.

Winthrop softball outslugs Monmouth to reach C South final

..."We knew Emily (Chasse) wasn't going to walk a lot people, so I told the girls to be aggressive, and it paid off," Gurney said.

Monmouth inched closer in the top of the third inning after Herr singled and Anderson ripped a triple to deep center. She came in to score on an infield error by Winthrop. Chasse came up next hitting a double putting runners on second and third but were both stranded.

Audet went to work shutting down the Monmouth hitters the next couple of innings.

Big inning lifts Winthrop softball over Monmouth, into regional final
Ramblers turn program around to become state championship threat

...A common theme for the Winthrop softball team has come from the band Journey and its 1981 hit song “Don’t stop believin’.”

Two years ago, the Ramblers were struggling to find players to field a team. Today, Winthrop is on its way to the regional final, and is a win away from the program’s first trip to a state championship game.

Thanks to a six-run offensive outburst in the first inning, the No. 2-ranked Ramblers beat No. 3 Monmouth 7-4 in a Class C South semifinal on Saturday.

Madison softball fights back, storms into regional final
Bulldogs edge Lisbon in Class C South semifinals.

...With one on and one out in the top of the seventh inning, Lisbon’s Ali Sult hit a line drive that looked destined to left field, until Madison third baseman Whitney Bess took two quick steps to her left and extended her left arm as far as she could to make the catch. Bess then made an easy throw to first base, doubling off Giana Russo to end the game and send the Bulldogs back to the regional championship game.

“I had just said to these guys, we’re going to need a big play,” Madison coach Chris LeBlanc said. “And then, it happens.”

The top-seeded and defending Class C state champion Bulldogs (17-1) will take on No. 2 Winthrop (13-5) in the regional final Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at St. Joseph’s College. No. 5 Lisbon ends the season at 11-7.

Robichaud’s home run lifts Bucksport to ‘C’ North softball championship

... Robichaud, the Penobscot Valley Conference Class C Player of the Year, had walked twice and struck out in her previous at-bats but launched Haley McLaughlin’s 3-0 pitch over the fence for her sixth homer of the season and second in as many games.

She belted a two-run homer in Bucksport’s 8-3 victory over Orono in the semifinals.

“She was the Player of the Year for a reason,” said Bucksport coach Mike Carrier, who told Robichaud the dropped popup “was an omen.”

Madison shuts out Winthrop, 12-0

STANDISH — Madeline Wood drove in four runs and held Winthrop to zero runs in Madison's 12-0 victory in five innings in the Class C South softball championship game at Richard W. Bailey Field at St. Joseph’s College on Wednesday.

“She just rises to the occasion,” Madison coach Chris LeBlanc said. “She’s a player, you know, mentally tough.”

From the pitcher’s circle, Wood struck out nine and allowed only three hits.

“She’s been doing really good about hitting her spots, and her outside corner was really on today and her changeup was really effective,” Madison catcher Ashley Emery said.

Madison wins Class C South softball championship
Bulldogs return to state title game for 2nd straight season.

...“Madeline was definitely on today,” Madison junior center fielder Sydney LeBlanc said. “We were really ready to go today. We had a good couple of days at practice this week, and we were ready. It’s an incredible feeling.”

Batting with the bases loaded and nobody out in the fifth, Wood swatted a pitch from Winthrop’s Layne Audet off the base of the fence in left-center field to open up a 4-0 lead for Madison (18-1).

LeBlanc (1 for 2, 2 RBIs) followed with an RBI single to left, and by the time the dust had settled the Bulldogs had sent 13 batters to the plate, scored 10 runs and put an early end to the contest.

Any takes on how this game will play out ?

Successful seniors lead Madison softball into state title game
Madeline Wood, Destiny Howes hope for big send-off when Bulldogs battle Bucksport for Class C championship.

...Part of her success certainly comes from not being in awe of the occasion.

“When you step back and really look at it, you realize only eight teams are left playing for a state softball championship and this is big,” Wood said. “But in the moment, you’re just like, ‘OK, we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do and just go out and win it.’ ”

LeBlanc thinks the ability for coaches in all sports at a small school like Madison to work together ensures that players like Wood have the ability to shine on more than one stage.
