Game Stories :

Smith dominates as Old Town repeats as ‘B’ softball champ

...“I can’t even express how hard she’s worked over the winter to want to be our No. 1,” Plourde said. “It paid off.”

Smith, who played center field on Old Town’s 2016 state title team, showed the poise of a hurler who had significant state-game experience.

“To be in the circle is a whole different feeling,” Smith said. “There’s always going to be some nerves but you’ve got to put them aside and focus on the game.”

Plourde knew Fryeburg wouldn’t go down without a battle after what happened in Tuesday’s regional championship game. The Raiders reminded her of a familiar foe.

Old Town, behind 19 Ks from McKenna Smith, stops Fryeburg

STANDISH — McKenna Smith didn't allow herself to think about how she was pitching for seven innings. According to Old Town's team rule, she's only allowed to think about each out, hit, or otherwise for just seven seconds.

She'll have plenty of time to think about her pitching performance now. In what might be an unforgettable outing for some, the Coyotes' junior pitcher struck out 19 batters to lift Old Town to a 2-0 victory over Fryeburg Academy in the Class B softball state championship at Richard W. Bailey Field on Saturday.

"She just dominated the game," Fryeburg coach Fred Apt said.

Mckenna Smith pitches Old Town to Class B softball title

(Standish ME) Mckenna Smith.

Where do you begin in describing her part in Old Town’s 2-0 victory over Fryeburg Academy in such an important game?

The obvious would be her NINETEEN strikeouts. In a seven-inning softball game there are only twenty-one outs! One of the other two outs was a popup caught by Mckenna.

The other out? Great catch by Coyotes left fielder Jannessa Brown in the Raiders’ 3rd inning. A shot by Fryeburg’s Mackenzie Buzzell looked headed for the base of the LF fence but Jannessa sprinted straight back and was tall enough to make the grab. With a runner (Grace Condon) on first there might have been a FA run without Jannessa’s catch.

Old Town softball looks back on state title repeat

OLD TOWN - The Old Town Coyotes repeated as champions in Class B over the weekend. However, because of all the competition in the class this spring, head coach Jennifer Plourde said they never fully expected to reach these heights this time around.

"To this day, you talk to [the girls] and I don't think it's sunk in yet," she said Thursday. "My coaches and I kind of sat back and said 'wow.' There were a lot of text messages and emails during the season where we said 'did we just do this?'"
