Wells walks off with 2-1 win over Yarmouth
An infield single drives home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the top-ranked Warriors reach the Class B South final.

...With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Hannah Moody looped a ball over Yarmouth pitcher Ceanne Lyon’s head just far enough to elude hustling second baseman Sydney St. Pierre. Karissa Kenyon ran across with the winning run as No. 1 Wells beat No. 4 Yarmouth 2-1 in a Class B South semifinal Saturday.

“I was thinking just get the bat on the ball and we have a girl on third so she should be able to get home,” Moody said. “It was just incredible. I saw it. (St. Pierre) was so close to it.”

Wells (17-1) returns to the regional final for the first time since 2014 and will face third-seeded Fryeburg Academy at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s College. Fryeburg (15-3), which beat No. 7 Morse 5-4 in the other semifinal, is the only team to defeat Wells this season.

Two top ‘B’ North stars lead teams into softball title game

Old Town High School junior pitcher McKenna Smith has yet to give up a run in the Class B North softball playoffs.

Oceanside High School of Rockland/Thomaston senior first baseman Alexis Mazurek has pounded out five hits in two playoff games including a walkoff home run against archrival Medomak Valley of Waldoboro.

She has tied the school record for homers in a season with eight and one of her regular-season blasts was a game-winner.

Old Town nips Oceanside in 8 innings to defend ‘B’ North softball crown

...“That was incredible. To have her step up like that,” said Old Town junior pitcher McKenna Smith.

Natalie St. Louis had opened the eighth by grounding an opposite-field single to right. Morgan Love laid down a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error sent St. Louis to third and Love to second. Smith was walked intentionally before the groundout and liner set the stage for Brown’s heroics.

The game featured a pitching duel between the impressive Smith and Jones, who both turned in masterpieces.

Smith had a no-hitter through 6 1/3 innings and finished with a one-hitter. She struck out 12, didn’t walk anyone and hit a batter. She threw 94 pitches, 66 for strikes.

Classic clash: Clutch eighth-inning hit lifts Old Town over Oceanside
Teams play seven and a half innings of scoreless ball before Coyotes walk off with win

...In fact, hits were tough to come by, as were base runners via batted ball or walks and, in the end, runs were nearly impossible to muster.

What settled the matter between the evenly-matched opponents was a clutch two-out, bases-loaded hit in the bottom of the eighth inning, just after it appeared the Mariners might pull off an escape act that would have made the great Houdini proud.

However, when the celebration had quieted and the disappointed Mariners stood watching the festivities, Old Town had pulled out an electrifying, hard-fought 1-0 victory.

Photos, video and more information from this game will appear later with this story.

Fryeburg rallies to shock Wells in regional final
The Raiders scored four runs in the top of the seventh to earn a trip to the state final
... Held to two hits in the first six innings, trailing by three runs entering their final at-bat against top-ranked Wells, the third-seeded Raiders scored four runs on six hits to defeat the Warriors 6-5 in the Class B South championship game at St. Joseph’s College.

Chloe Coen had the final hit, a two-run single down the left-field line that gave Fryeburg the lead in an emotional game with huge momentum swings.

“I just didn’t want the season to end,” said Coen. “I didn’t want to let my teammates down.”

Fryeburg rallies past Wells in seventh for Class B South title

..."It's been Buzzell, Cooper and Bennett all year. As they go, we go, and I didn't expect ... two freshman in a row, with Kaylee Emery and Paige O'Connell coming up big with hits. Putting the ball in play and forcing things," Apt said. "Chloe coming up big in that inning. Doesn't hit a lot. She gets on, she finds her way on, and that time there she came up big."

"They just started to hit us," Wells coach Kevin Fox said. "They did a good job of not giving up, and they got their bats going, and they just kind of put it where we weren't. What are you going to do?"

Softball: Championship traditions spur teams in Class A and B
The four schools playing for state titles have combined to win 10 championships in the last decade.

... Class B

Fryeburg Academy (16-3) vs. Old Town (17-2)

Saturday’s 12:30 p.m. game at St. Joseph’s College is a rematch of the 2012 game, won by Old Town.

The Coyotes defeated York for the state championship last year but never thought about repeating.

“We just have that mindset, one game at a time,” said Coach Jen Plourde

Buzzell, Cooper, Bennett the backbone for Fryeburg Academy

...Buzzell, the Raiders' starting center fielder and leadoff hitter, is part of a backbone for Fryeburg that includes catcher Makayla Cooper and pitcher Nicole Bennett.

"All three of them just have been together since little kids, doing everything together. And it shows," Fryeburg coach Fred Apt said. "They've been solid softball players who buy into the program, buy what we're teaching, and share what we're teaching. They share with the young kids.

"They share anything they've been taught, and they're willing to make the younger kids better. They put the program first."
