Morse knocks out Oak Hill in Class B South quarterfinal

..."We just left too many stranded," Oak Hill coach Allyson Collins said. "We couldn't seem to get a key hit. We'd get hits to start, and then we just could not get them consecutively and across the plate."

Despite the constant jams, Morse freshman pitcher Dory Kulis only had two singles and two walks on her record through those four innings.

"That's pretty composed for a young girl," Morse coach Wil Laffely said.

"I just settled in and basically figured out that, I knew I had a team behind that would make the plays when they hit the ball, which really helped," Kulis said.

Top-seeded Gardiner softball falls to Ellsworth
Tigers, playing without starting pitcher, only have 3 hits in loss.

...Freshman Maggie Bell drew her first varsity start for Gardiner and kept her team in the game. Her teammates got her a couple of early runs and, entering the fifth the score was tied at 2. The Eagles scored twice in the fifth and two more runs in the seventh. They had two hits in each inning and were helped by two Gardiner errors.

“She did a good job, they didn’t play defense behind her,” Gardiner coach Don Brochu said of Bell. “She did a great job.”

Chipman was even more effective, allowing three hits while walking two. Both walked runners, Haley Brann to open the game and Kylie Sirois to start the second, ended up scoring.

Yarmouth slips past Greely, 2-1
Hannah Merrill's two-run homer – and a five-hitter from pitcher Ceanne Lyon – lift the Clippers to the regionals semifinals

YARMOUTH — Hannah Merrill belted a two-run homer and pitcher Ceanne Lyon made those runs stand up Thursday as fourth-seeded Yarmouth edged fifth-ranked Greely 2-1 in a Class B South softball quarterfinal.

Lyon, a sophomore in her first season as Yarmouth’s starting pitcher, scattered five hits, striking out five and walking two to propel the Clippers to a regional semifinal at top-ranked Wells at 11 a.m. Saturday.

“This is what we need out of her,” Yarmouth Coach Amy Ashley said. “We want to go deep into the playoffs and that’s how we need her to pitch.”

Teaching, coaching at Hermon ‘like a vacation’ for retired Army tank commander

...Jenkins, who has a passion for coaching, leads his 16-1 Hawks into Saturday’s 4 p.m. Class B North softball semifinal at Old Town.

He coached several sports in the Army including baseball, softball, ice hockey, football and basketball. He also played a number of sports.

“I love coaching,” said the 46-year-old Jenkins. “This has really filled a void for me. The thing I miss most about the military is having that ability to train people and to compete. It is something I enjoy doing.”

Jenkins has had an outstanding first season as a head coach. Hermon earned the No. 3 seed in Class B North and beat Foxcroft Academy 10-4 in the quarterfinals.

Old Town blanks Hermon to gain ‘B’ North softball championship game berth

...The hard-throwing Smith struck out 11 and walked three while throwing 94 pitches of which 62 were strikes.

“She pitched great,” said Hermon coach Rob Jenkins. “She had a lot of great stuff. She threw her rise ball real well, she had a great changeup and she was mixing up her pitches.”

She lost her no-hitter when Hailey Perry rifled a single to right-center to lead off the seventh. Bre Oakes followed with a long double to left, but Perry tried to score and was thrown out at the plate.

“Her curveball and rise were what I struggled with all season,” said senior catcher Perry.
