Leaders on young Skowhegan softball team are double trouble for foes
Lindsey Warren and Wylie Bedard help lead Indians to Class A title game.

...“We’ve been playing together since we were really little so I’m comfortable with her next to me. I know if she doesn’t get it, I’ll get to it. We’re just a good team,” Bedard said.

Despite repeating as North regional champion, Skowhegan is a young team. The Indians roster features no seniors. Warren and Bedard are two of four juniors. They agree the run through the Class A North tournament showed the team’s growth. Warren said the 12-0 win over Bangor was the offensive breakout the team needed.

“Our confidence is there now,” Warren said.

Game stories:

Volk pitches Scarborough to Class A softball crown

...Coach Lee Johnson’s Indians were vying for their first state crown since 2014 while playing in the final game for the fourth time in five years.

Volk, who will play at the University of Maine next season, controlled the North region champions throughout the contest with a heavy fastball and a mix of pitches. The right-hander struck out 13 while walking one and hitting a batter during an 86-pitch effort that featured 68 strikes.

Volk went to one three-ball count during the game and had just one other two-ball count as she continually pitched ahead of the Skowhegan batters and showed little signs of tiring during the late innings. Volk recorded nine of her team’s last 11 outs by strikeout.

Scarborough caps perfect season with Class A title
Pitcher Lilly Volk leads the Red Storm to a 3-0 win over Skowhegan.

...Volk and Ricker each hit two singles for the Red Storm, who have won five state championships since 2007.

Scarborough finished with no errors while Skowhegan made three – starting with a dropped fly ball on the first batter of the game. Skowhegan pitcher Ashley Alward prevented the Red Storm from capitalizing on the mistake, closing out the inning with two strikeouts and a popout. Alward finished with nine strikeouts. Annie Cooke and Alyssa Everett got the only hits for Skowhegan, which lost in the state final for the second straight year.

“That’s the way the kids have played all year – they found ways to battle,” Skowhegan Coach Lee Johnson said. “The kids showed a lot of heart and found a way to compete the whole day.”

Skowhegan softball comes up short to Scarborough in Class A title game
Red Storm's Lilly Volk holds Indians to two hits in game.

...The state title appearance was the second straight for the Indians (17-3), who won the title in 2014. Four of the Red Storm’s state championships have come at the expense of the Indians.

“They’ve got their record for a reason,” Skowhegan coach Lee Johnson said. “They’re a darn good club.”

Junior Ashley Alward pitched well in taking the loss, allowing eight hits while striking out nine. The three runs she allowed — two in the fourth and one in the seventh — were unearned.

“I think I pitched pretty well given that they’re a good team,” Alward said. “It’s always good to get to the state game. It hurts a little bit but it’s good to have something to build on next year. It’s good to know that we’re all coming back. We have no seniors.”

Scarborough softball returns to Class A pinnacle

After four years of regular season dominance, followed by playoff agony, Scarborough’s softball team returned to what it believes is its rightful place, the top of the Class A mountain, last week.

And in typical Red Storm fashion, they received brilliant pitching and bashed their way to the top, capping a perfect season.

Scarborough, which lost to Messalonskee (1-0) in the 2015 state final, then was upset, 9-7, by eventual champion Biddeford in last year’s Class A South Final, oustcored the opposition, 228-15, en route to a 16-0 record in the regular season, extending its regular season win streak to 73 games over five years.
